John Carter is now infamous due to the (largely unfair) negative press hype. It was actually much better than I expected. I think many reviews were right to point out that the film does feel a bit "recycled" if you're a well-versed fan of Sci-fi/fantasy films (the irony, of course, being that this story predates many of the canonical films of the genre). The downside of this is that there aren't too many plot suprises. The good part is that, like these films it's a good deal of fun. The most disappointing aspect is that, given the film's huge budget, it does not have a unique visual story telling. The sets, CGI characters, makeup and costumes make the film look as if it is some combination of Star Wars and Waterworld. This is a little dissapointing. Overall, I think this a good time at the movies and well-worth checking out.

Very well done! I had read Burrough's books in my teens (40 years ago) and didn't think the movie could live up to my imagination, but it was great. I could quibble with the relentless fast pace, or the plot complexity, but I was relieved that the dialog was not snarky, the leads were appropriately heroic, and the many races of Barsoom were wonderfully realized. This movie is great, old-fashioned, epic science fiction, I enjoyed it in 3D, soundtrack was plenty loud!

Thoroughly enjoyed move & 3D effects. The actors were wonderful and the female lead was gorgeous. Please make the two sequels. It was great for what it was. If I wanted a serious movie I would have gone to see "In Darkness" which I recommend to everyone. John Carter was fun, never boring, and the special effects and the actors kept it moving. Great for its genre.

kFrom a viewer that did not read the books, this is an interesting movie from start to finish. It seemed to throw in various "been there" moments from many of our favorite movies. However it was comical at times and some of the action scenes were pretty cool. Not a lot of toil or down time which is what I hate most about movies. This is a fun movie for the family and pretty cool at Moore warren IMAX which is an insane experience regardless of the movie you watch.

I came to this movie with high hopes, but with a belief that I would be disappointed overall. The advertising for this movie lacked in many aspects, and it is only due to my reading the first five books of the series that I had any interest to see this movie. I thought they would butcher Burroughs' epic novels, but I came away quite pleased with what they accomplished. Certainly they took some artistic liscence, and many things were changed, but overall it wasn't bad. I saw it in the IMAX 3D experience, and the movie was epic enough to make it well worth the money. I can't wait for the sequels.

Quite worth the price of admission. The abilities Carter was given to jump in the low gravity of Mars was overdone, far beyond what would be realistic. His other strengths were not consistent with the jumping ability. I liked the inclusion of Burroughs as a character and the ending leaves room for sequels. Similarities with Star Wars were obvious--weapons of Tharks are like Tusken Raiders, aerial battles, death rays, monster pets, etc. Don't know how the movie compares with the book, so have downloaded on my Kindle (for free) to re-read.

We went to see this movie at the IMAX theater and had a great time. I had read this series of Edgar Rice Burroughs books many years ago, so didn't know what to expect from a movie version. I was pleasantly surprised by how well done this was. It kept the intent of the story while maybe differing in slight ways that kept the movie going along at a nice pace. You get to like the characters, and there was enough action to keep you interested, even a little humor and just a touch of romance...don't get me wrong...there's plenty of fight scenes and the different Mars species were well done..(can't really call them aliens on their own planet?) Overall it was a very enjoyable movie and I would recommend it to friends.

Go with an open mind and you'll be pleasantly surprised. This story has the original roots of Star Wars and Avatar plus similar outstanding special effects and visuals. This movie was such a disappointment! There was no character development. Hence, I didn't really care what happened to the people. This movie was okay--it wasn't eye-roll horrible like Jar Jar Binks or other embarassing movie moments in otherwise good films...but it just wasn't a very good movie.
My husband is a big comic book guy so I see a lot of these kinds of films, and I think I'm pretty generous with my tolerance. In fact, I've liked every one of them, from Sky Captain to Thor, but John Carter just isn't very compelling. I thought that with Michael Chabon on the screenplay that it would actually be very good. I was really disappointed.
The action was undercut by the 3D, IMHO, and would've been much more impressive in a regular film format. In 3D, the images seem to jump around and you can't catch the detail of the fight scenes, which is a shame. After an hour, I kept hoping the film would end...but it went on and on and on. I feel like they wasted a lot of money on special effects that didn't further the plot or serve any purpose in the movie. Ray Harryhausen would've done a much more compelling rendition of the story.

I've never been to an 3D Imax and it was worth the 30 dollars for my husband and I to go. I can't explain how much fun I had at this film. I went expecting to enjoy it but I left loving it. I was completely into this movie and I was right there in the film. I highly remomend this film I went in blind and left looking up the book to download on my kindel. I also bought the poster. Oh and buying the ticket online was also a first and it was so easy I and I didn't have to stand in line at all.

... experience of epic proportions. John Carter IMAX 3D paints a massive landscape - from 1880s Earth to a populated waring Mars (Barsoom). This movie does many things well and falls short in a few that keeps it from being an epic sci-fi masterpiece. The actors, the CGI, the cinematography - all get high marks. The dialogue could have been better and the script gets a barely passing grade. I remember reading John Carter novels (& Tarzan) as a 9 & 10 year old lad and I loved them all. The stories were easy to comprehend and follow. This big screen translation would be hard for most folks to follow if they had not read John Carter previously. It's a shame that the script and dialogue could not have been better. That said this movie is still worth seeing for the visuals and the overall spectacle. A red tinged rhino horn up.

The storyline adaption from Edgar Rice Burroughs book was well written and carried out very well. Some of the various segments in the movie showed a definite flavor of Star Wars, Avatar and even Raiders of the Lost Ark in some respects but still different enough to carry it off very well. Especially liked the intrigue of if John Carter would be able to return to Earth and then back to Mars. Viewing this movie in IMAX 3D definitely enhance the experience.

Finally, a film depiction worthy of being associated with Edgar Rice Burroughs visions. Went expecting to be disappointed, came away enthused that the genre could be brought to the big screen at last. Hopefully there will be more ERB to come in the future. Absolutely enjoyable.

Our family of four enjoyed it. It was slow in the beginning but once John Carter got to Mars, the action picked up. I can't recommend seeing it in IMAX 3D because several scenes were a whirling out of focus 3D blur. All of us noticed this. Perhaps regular 3D would be better. I would give it 4 stars in 2D. It was a fun escape for 2 hours.

Thoroughly enjoyed this movie for the best of reasons: It is entertaining! Excellent acting, beautiful scenery, exciting non-stop action, well balanced storyline, and great special effects. Enjoyed the IMAX 3D too! The concept of the hero's physical actions, while there, are based on real physics too. Enjoy!!

This epic is definitely worth seeing, just for the spectacle of a 250 million dollar Disney production. However, be prepared for a very slow first act and some very confusing situations. Just try remembering the names and political scenarios of an entirely new world. Overall it was an exciting, adventurous, and very clever journey into the science fiction realm.

Saw it Friday on IMAX in a group of three - an 8 year old boy, 30 something female, and 60+ year old male - all loved it. Better than anticipated and the big screen is a definite plus. Interesting back story for the lead character that stays important throughout whole movie. Great effects that blended well. Good mix of subtle humor to go with action. Hope people go and judge this one for themselves.
