I really enjoyed this film. Karl Urban is great as Dredd. It's a fun movie with good action and story and some great 3D shots. Huge improvement over the Stallone movie. If you're an action movie fan and especially if you're a Dredd fan, then go see it.
Pros well paced, great story, violence not toned down, 3d
Cons may not be a sequel?
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Although Karl Urban looks a lot like Stallone under the Dredd helmet, his version of the character is without the 90's kitch or tongue in cheek catch phrases. Instead, this is a single day in the life of a single minded Judge who is also jury and most notably executioner. The story takes place in the megacity in the dark and grim far future in a single megatower apartment building. Dredd and his psychic trainee Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) are locked inside by the drug lord in a multistory battle to the death. The twist here is Anderson and her ability to get into someone's head. She's quite the scene stealer.
Although it starts off slowly, it accelerates into a non-stop action adventure film pumped up with enough adrenaline and testosterone to make Stallone jealous. Be aware, its very graphically violent and the effective 3D only makes it more so.
No, its not a classic, but it is far truer to the Judge Dredd stories than Stallone's was. If you're a fan of the series, you'll enjoy this.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

As faithful a rendition as can be. I read the 2000 AD comics when they first hit the newsagents and had it delivered with my Beano and Dandy. I marvelled at the sinister diversity that was Mega City One and the range and complexity of characters depicted. Dredd cut through all the chaff, dispensing Justice in an aloof, cold, severe and supremely efficient manner. I always felt a pang of fear, even empathy, for the poor misguided perps who thought they could carry out their unlawful actions un-judged.... fools! Forget the other film. Dredd is dread, he is here, Mega City One is here, prepare to be judged.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, faithful rendition of the comic, great style
Cons not long enough

I did not know what to expect walking into this movie, but I did think it would be a much better movie. Much more could have been done with the plot, the lines and the cast, especially given the excellent performances by Lena Headey and Olivia Thirlby.

I went to this movie not expecting a great deal. You know what you're gonna get with a film like this. However, there is more to this movie than the trailer suggests. Especially the look of the film and the incredible visual effects. I really enjoyed this film. I guess the highest praise I can give is that it makes me want to see more of what goes on in MegaCity 1, if this is just a day in life of Judge Dredd!
Pros great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

"Dredd 3D" is fantastic B-movie fun

“Dredd 3D” is one of the best sci-fi actioners I’ve seen this side of the millennium. Karl Urban plays Judge Dredd, a ruff n’ tuff cop in a violent future where his employer, The Hall of Justice, dispatches judges to extract justice on the lawbreakers of Mega City One, a sprawling wasteland of concrete and crime from Boston to the Capitol. These judges have been given the power of judge, jury, and executioner, so you don’t cross them. On the day of the film, Dredd takes up a rookie cop (Olivia Thirlby) to train in the ways of 20xx law enforcement. As a bonus, she’s a psychic, which comes in handy in quite a few situations, of course. They answer a homicide call at a 200-story futuristic project, where the crime boss Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) has taken complete control. Afraid that the cops will edge in on her drug business (Slo-Mo, which makes the brain fell as if it’s experiencing life at 1% normal speed – this allows for some absolutely amazing sequences of slow-motion photography and violence), she hacks the building and locks them in, with one ultimatum over the loudspeaker: The doors won’t open til the cops are dead. And that’s the rest of the movie, a wonderfully action-packed wallop of stylistic violence and gore that understands it’s a high-end B-movie and revels in it. The dialogue is so gruff and packed with machismo that you’re guaranteed to grow chest hair by the film’s end. What pulls this film up to a higher notch is the care given to the look and gadgets of the players. The judges’ armor is incredibly intimidating, and their guns are a marvel that never stops surprising. The violence is intense and in-your-face (literally, if you see it in 3D, which I fully recommend, surprisingly), and the final result is a film that is so much fun you’ll forget that it doesn’t mean much when it’s over.

This was one of the worst remakes I have ever seen. It was a terrible attempt at a kinder, gentler, more pc Judge Dredd who, by the way, is not really the main hero of the movie. The main hero is the softer, psychic female rookie who wants to "make a difference" by ignoring the law and giving out her own brand of social justice.
Cons bad acting, slow
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I went into this movie wondering whether I would be wasting my money on another cheesey remake of a 90's flick. I can say I spent my money well. This is a very good movie. I have never read the comics, so I can't say whether this movie follows them or not. It is, however, a very dark, gritty, and violent movie. *** Folks that have an adversion to blood and gore should NOT go to see this movie! ***
Karl Urban is great in the role as Dredd. Viewers can expect none of the hokey dialog that you see in the 1995 "Judge Dredd" with Sly Stallone. There are a couple of slow spots in the movie, but the action scenes more than make up for these.
The 3D effects are very good (some are quite spectacular) but not "overdone". Those of you who see the movie in 2D will miss out on some really cool effects, but overall won't miss out on a very good movie.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, nice 3d effects
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Dredd, 1.5 hrs of violent comic action, must see for fans of the comics. However, a typical movie goer will easily be turned off by the simple story, and lack of character depth. If I did not know the character Judge Dredd, I would probably consider this an all around bad movie.
Pros well paced, great actors, dredd never removes his helmet
Cons not for non action or comic fans
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This, finally, is the Dredd movie comic book readers have been anticipating, it's savage, beautiful and loads of fun. "Dredd 3D" may present a dreary vision of the future, but it offers a promising encapsulation of the modern action movie. Not the fastest-moving action movie you'll see, but it remains true to the comics thanks to Karl Urban's spot-on portrayal of Dredd. With its dark characters and the grim setting, the film masterfully creates a compelling, nightmarish atmosphere. A must see.

This movie was epic! It was non-stop action from beginning to end. As soon as it starts it doesn't let up in it's brutality. It shows a bleak world and an even bleaker set of rules for the inhabitants. Dredd knows what it is and it's an unrelenting hard core action movie. It doesn't try to be anything else. If you dig old school action, then this is your flick!

Going to start with this: Judge Dredd does not begin and end with Stallone's terrible 1995 movie. Dredd's been at the forefront of British pop culture for the last 35 years and anyone with a passing knowledge of the comic strip would have seen Stallone's movie got just about everything wrong. Therefore, this is not a remake anymore than Christopher Nolan 'remade' Batman.
Saw DREDD at San Diego Comic Con. They got everything right. The tone, the violence, the humor. It's everything I wanted from a Dredd movie. Budget shortcomings show up a little here and there but nothing that would rip you out of the movie.
To be honest, the thing I loved most about it was it feels like it was made in the 70's right down to the design of the city. If you try to think where they would have gone without the likes of Blade Runner, Fifth Element to influence modern production design, this is what you would have got. That whole look's been done to death and would have been far too obvious for this.
VERY bleak, depressing vision of the future and to be honest, sells the idea of why the Judges are needed much more effectively than the comics ever did. There's a dangerous atmosphere off the movie. Reminded me of Deliverance. Always something poisonous bubbling under what you're watching.
If there was a sub-genre of movies this would belong to, it would be Mad Max, Escape From New York, Magnum Force. Tough, harsh, streamlined movies with no fat and simple plots. No sugary character arcs or morals. There's huge themes to be taken from the movie in regards to where our society is potentially going and the role of the people assigned to safeguard us but the movie's not going to waste the time pointing that out to you if you're not interested in that kinda stuff.
The casting elevates the material. Urban's absolutely perfect as Dredd but it's Thirlby as Anderson who raises the whole thing up from what would have been a disaster with the wrong actress. Tough role and she pulls it off like a champion.
Glad they went with the R-rated approach. Sets it apart from the usual family-friendly lowest-common-denominator bilge. Hope it does well enough for a sequel, obviously, but even if it's just stand-alone I'm happy. It's been made by people who worship the material it's based on and that's all you can ask for in the end.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.
