Went to see this for my birthday and it was great. The ending left us hanging wondering how if there will be another one. The ending, for us, was left open for more.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors

i saw the 3D imax version. overall the movie was great. so much action that it felt like a rollercoaster ride. I was yelling out loud and ducking from flying objects! i had but one qualm. It got very slow with dialogue about a half hour in. I may have fallen asleep for a min or two. I suppose that was a direct result of them taking the shortest book and trying to make three, 3hr movies out of it.
Pros great story, great actors
Cons slow
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The movie overall was superb and stuck to the story line of the book but to not finish it as per the story line was very disappointing. I know that this is done purposely to get people to purchase tickets to see the finish but for me, it should have taken us to the end on the first run.

What can I say? There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Special effects were stunning, as expected. 3D Imax was terrific. Could have done with less insertion of ties to LOTR and info taken from the appendices of the books (far too much of Radagast in the film). The story would have stood on it's own, without these things. That said, it was still damn good entertainment - just got a little tired at about the 2 hour mark, with no chance for a break.
Pros great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I was lucky enough to see this in IMAX 3D and can I say it was a brilliant experience. I went in not really expecting much - I know shameful of me- and I ended up enjoying it a lot. Peter Jackson did a swell job on this movie and I hope he's proud of it. People who loved the book should love this movie as well. They did an excellent job with the plot line and the actors were actually perfect. I really was entranced in the movie to the point I never once checked my phone for the time, which is incredibly rare for me. I seriously recommend this movie to everyone. Though I do have to say if you see it in IMAX try to get a seat a ways from the screen. Unfortunately, my friends and I had to sit pretty close to the screen and some of the scenes made my head ache to watch but other then that go see it NOW!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, true to the book

The IMAX 3D version of "The Hobbit" was an amazing experience. We are whisked away into Middle Earth with wonderful, memorable characters, a story wrapped in a world unlike any other, and vistas and underworlds that are breathtaking. I had low expectations for this film because I did not believe that Director Peter Jackson could even come close to his masterpiece, "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy. But if this first film is any indication, he has taken the time to fashion a film of equal depth and appeal! Congratulations to a great cast, great storytelling, and images that will haunt you long after you've left the theater.

I think that they definitely did the book justice with this movie. My only big problem with it is that they used CGI animation to create all the orcs, all the goblins, every single monster. And there was no blood at all. All of the grittiness and gore that was the Lord of the Rings is completely lost on the Hobbit. CGI can't replace the look of real actors with well done effects makeup. It was definitely made with a younger audience in mind.
Pros great story, great actors

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is mostly what you’d expect it to be. If you’ve seen Peter Jackson’s “LOTR Trilogy” and have been keeping an eye on the TV spots and movie trailers, it’s just like that. Not much more. And not that that’s bad, the film is fantastic entertainment. However, it feels so much like a rehash of some of “LOTR”‘s most famous scenes that one could begin to think that the filmmakers, as they tried to stretch out a single book into three films, were running low on originality. Perhaps that’s why they decided to go with the High Frame Rate format, a gimmick even cheaper than 3D that displays the film at twice the frame rate of standard projection, resulting in a hyper-realistic, sped up look that feels like a daytime soap opera. It is anything but cinematic (see it in IMAX, instead!). However, HFR and 3D do indeed compliment each other, and there are certainly grand possibilities here for the advancement of cinema. Just don’t experiment with it on such important works as Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”. Save that for “Avatar 2″. But I digress. The film itself covers the first third of the book, and introduces us to a much younger Bilbo as he reluctantly joins Gandalf the Wizard and a company of Dwarves determined to reclaim their homeland from a wicked dragon. We won’t see that fight until the second movie, though, so this film fills its nearly three-hour running time with trolls, giant spiders, goblins, and orcs. While some parts stretch a bit, there is plenty of adventure, sweeping vistas, and fighting to please every fan boy (the film has already shot to #88 on IMDb.com’s Top 250, a sure sign of bloated fan boy love). The best scene by far, however, takes place deep in a cave, between Bilbo Baggins and a familiar face, Gollum. Their game of riddles to determine Bilbo’s fate is perfectly written and is so full of wit, charm, and suspense that it threatens to spill out of the screen. Andy Serkis’s masterful motion-capture performance outdoes anything he has ever done before. The man is sheer brilliance, and the day that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognizes that will be a great day indeed. He earns a spot as one of five Best Supporting Performances of 2012, in my book at least.

Peter Jackson once again delivers big on creating a beautiful depiction of Middle Earth. I loved all the extra footage from the appendices of The Lord of the Rings that further delves into the happenings in Middle Earth while the storyline of The Hobbit take place. It adds a much more direct connection between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings- one of the opening scenes in The Hobbit (Bilbo getting ready to write down his adventure) takes place the same day as one of the opening Scenes in Fellowship of the Ring (which I thought was REALLY awesome how they did that). Didn't find it slow at all, as some critics seemed to be saying. Will be seeing again.

If you are a fan of LOTR movies or books, then this is a must-see...and you've probably already watched it or are planning to.
If you are unfamiliar with the all that is Middle Earth, this is still a very fun movie. If you have no idea about the movies or books, you may be a bit confused about some of the characters and such incremental to this and the LOTR series (ie. the ring, Gollum, Galladrial, etc.), but this is a very small group of people.
I liked the inclusion of Radagast. The depiction of characters was most excellent from the dwarves to even the "bad guys" like Azog and the Goblin King...and of course Gollum.
I could go on about the art, acting, costumes, the fact that the dwarf song has been pleasantly stuck in my head for the last couple of days, etc....but...I'll end by encouraging you to go watch it already!!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I was happy to hear this summer, from another fan of Peter Jackson's LOTR films, that his The Hobbit film would be done as a trilogy. I had read the four respective Tolkien novels, but was unfamiliar with much of the back story that could drive The Hobbit to become three new films.
This film moved at a brisk pace, introducing, and giving life, to the characters that I had long forgotten about (my bad!). I find myself eagerly awaiting the next two films.

An Unexpected Journey although not up to the caliber of any of the three Lord of the Rings films was on it's own a very good movie. My son and I saw it in 3D IMAX and were expecting to be disappointed based on the critical reviews we had read. The exact opposite was true. We became engrossed in the story, we shared a chuckle or two with the packed house during various scenes and felt some emotion when Gandalph connects with Galadriel and she offers him her help. And when Bilbo is finally accepted by all of the dwarfs. It felt good to reconnect with some of the familiar characters from the LOR series. If you are not a fan of Tolkien you might find the movie long and some scenes tedious, but for those of us who feel at home in the Shire or Rivendell this was indeed a pleasant journey back to Middle Earth.

Cons slow

Truth be told, I was ready and willing to be more than slightly let down by this movie. Even with low expectations, my love of the Middle-earth milieu and fond memories of the trilogy films made it a certainty that I would pay to see these new films.
I feel safe in asserting that any Tolkien fan would agree that taking a relatively brief story like, The Hobbit" and stretching it into three long films seemed overly ambitious if not foolhardy. I am pleased to report that rather than diluting Middle-earth, this film brought that world more fully and richly to life. Rather than seeming like cynical attempts to stretch the film, the inclusion of minor characters and ancillary story lines serves to flesh-out the world they inhabit.
The few points that took me out of the story are minor and all but forgotten when the film is done. As one would expect "The Hobbit" is a visual masterpiece. The attention to detail in both the micro and the macro elements is commendable. The goblin lair was not just a small enclave, it was a city. Every filthy splinter and every gnarled fiber of rough woven rope were rendered as though they mattered, as indeed they do. Nothing takes me out of a story quicker than noticeable corner-cutting. If you care about the big things, you must first make the little things right.
The one thing that will ruin an immersive experience more than the above is a director who just can't help but insert himself in a film. Messrs Spielberg and Lucas are the two most egregious violators I can think of. There were a few such moments in the Lord of the Rings trilogy but Peter Jackson seems to have outgrown the need to call attention to himself.
In summation: "The Hobbit..." is a finely crafted film that pays true homage to the original material and the vision of its creator. Though long, I never once thought of checking my watch. With the possible exception of dwarven sing-alongs I could have done without and one too many flashbacks, there was no sense of obvious padding to stretch the material.
If you are a Tolkien fan, a fan of high adventure or just someone who appreciates the film making at its finest, "The Hobbit" is a must see.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, immersively detail
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The movie fulfiled my expectations but it was to long. I needed more depth for the length of the movie. I think as a Lord of the Rings movie fan they are filling in holes about how relationships started, etc, nicely. I viewed the movie in the 3D IMAX and it was so clear and realistic. This was the first moview I truely enjoyed start to finish in 3D. I can hardly wait for the next installment.
Pros great story, great actors
Cons slow
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I saw this in IMAX & it was fabulous. I always think the fight scenes are too long (I did in LOTR,as well). The sets & cinematography were amazing. So glad the cast from LOTR returned to do these movies, it was like coming home to see them again. Will see it again & again until the next one comes out.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, followed story line, great cinematography, great sets
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Don't get me wrong. It was a good movie but it seemed like they wanted to see just how long they can draw out the battle scenes, and there were plenty of them. Toward the end I found myself just waiting for it to end so I wouldn't have to watch any more battle scenes. Then just when they're finished one battle, you get about 10 minutes of developing story, then more fighting.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Many of the comments are right on regarding the camerawork. There are times when the shooting was blurry. If the camera had been a little farther away, the tracking of the action would have caused less blur.
There were many times when the dialogue was less than clear. Ultimately, it was comprehensible. Comparing this to the Lord of the Rings, which was not 3D, I don't think 3D enhanced the movie; there were a couple of cute episodes, but the movie, itself did not need to be 3D.
Overall, this is an excellent prelude to Lord of the Rings, even with the cinematic flaws. I wonder how the "Enhanced" version would be???
Pros well paced, great story
Cons blurred movement
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Wild and fast action which at times is overwhelming in 3D and IMAXX. I want to see it again without those. The story works even with the extra information from the LOTR appendices. I like the beginning. The dwarf characters are true to Tolkein and Bilbo is engaging. Very different from Frodo so it takes some adjusting. The movie certainly did not drag at all.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I was worried seeing that they were splitting this small book into three films that it was going to be slow and ponderous but nope, full of action. I love how they integrated more of the history and lore of Middle Earth into the story. After seeing The Hobbit I am now wishing that they could have extended the Lord of the Rings series even more.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
