The movie was formulaic and predictable, but it was good entertainment and definitely a family movie. When a storyline involves a historical topic, we're not going to be 'wowed' by something spectacular. The movie was designed to inspire, which it did. Great job!

The Special Effects and CGI work is top notch. The only thing missing is Acting. It is sad the the acting in this movie was severely below par.
This movie should have been much better. Especially with the History there is.

This by far exceeded my expectations. The script was great and gave a lot of insight into how African Americans were treated even in the military. It had great action, the production of this movie was brilliant. I commend George Lucas for pressing forward even though no one wanted to back him. Taking the initiative use his own funds to fund this movie is such an honor. How awesome is that? I hope he gets every cent back and more! Kudos!!! to George for a job well done!

I always judge a movie on how I feel the day after seeing it. I am still thinking about all of the great scenes in the movie. There was good balance of laughter, drama, visual affects and the story felt real. This is a movie for 'everyone'. Very well done George Lucas!

A feel good movie

The theater was packed with a multi-racial audience of young families and people whose parents would have served in WWII. There were spontaneous cheers during the movie and at the end there was heartfelt applause. The true story is a great one. It tells how the all black flying squadron, marginalized and kept away from action because of explicit and overt racism, demanded the right to equal treatment in the military. Their excellence, professionalism, patriotism and skill could not be denied or ignored. Through sheer determination, they earned respect and a place on the front lines where they were allowed to fight for their country (which BTW still had segregated lunchrooms and bathrooms at home) and to die. The movie itself is a little thin on plot and I never did get a handle on Cuba Goodings character but the flying sequences are grand and the overall effect is worthwhile and uplifting.

The story of the 332nd Fighter Group is one well worthy of telling. While the film uses incredible special effects to bring the air combat to life, the dialogue is poorly written, often so over the top and full of cliche it would be better fitting to a comic book than what could have been a quality drama. It is worth seeing for the special effects and because of the story it is supposed to tell, just don't expect the dialogue to impress.

This is a good movie about a great story. It's not award-level, but Red Tails is an American story that's worth sharing and seeing. I was pleasantly surprised that the movie didn't over-play the race issue; nor was there unnecessary cursing, sex or gory violence. This is a movie that anyone over 10 years old could see and appreciate. However, this was not a good role for Cuba Gooding Jr, Aside from the fact he's a mediocre actor in general (except in "Jerry Maguire"), he just wasn't convincing as a lead military officer-- almost laughable.

Expected more from LUCASFILMS. I know Cuba Gooding Jr. was glad to be in this film, but he was once in a much better World War II movie called "Pearl Harbor". The story is good, but during the fighter dogfight sequences and the bomber cover fights, you are conscious that it is mostly a special effects effort. There is, however, one battle scene on the level of some of the scenes in "Saving Private Ryan". Two fighters make a strafing run on a German military train. You get the beautiful views from the pilots' vantage point as the approach to the train is made, and you also get a good look at the action from the perspective of the German soldiers on the train as the planes approach. Very realistic.

Red tails is a historical movie which brought the subject of discrimination and prejudice in the armed forces during the German occupation. I thought the movie was done well with great special effects and characters who were true to life. I can relate to this movie in that I am a nurse and actually took care of a Tuskeegee Airman while working at one of the Veterans Hospitals. This gentlemen had lasting problems from frostbite to his feet while flying and was very proud to have served his country. The movie brought tears to my eyes on several occassions while watching. I loved this movie and would give it a thumbs up to anyone who loves the history of world war II.

I liked the movie, but I think George Lucas confused the main characters - Col Bullard, CPT "Easy" Julian, - with his iconic STAR WARS characacters Hans Solo, Luke Skywalker. The supporting characters - Deke, Lightning, Winky - were far more realistically portrayed. Cuba Gooding as pipe-smoking MAJ Stance added little to the flick - his character seemed be the "Yoda" of this film, and probably raked in big bucks for his minor role.In my judgment, the most poignant scenes are between Sofia and her African-American lover - done with dignity and pathos. The exploits of the REAL Tuskegee Airman in the 332nd Fighter Wing were far more noble and heroic than this film illustrates. I think George Lucas has never accepted his 2nd fiddle "trying to compete with"position to Steven Spielberg. Truth be told, this was a fun, "feel good" but inaccurate portrayal of a great group of heroes!

The story was very compelling in depicting the courage and determination of the men to serve their country and reach their greatest potential, despite all the obstacles. Although I would like to have seen more in the film about their lives and loved ones back home, I really enjoyed the movie and the flight and battle scenes were exciting.

First the bad. This story starts with the 332nd already in Italy so there is no background on the training or bigotry that they endured in the states. That ends the bad. The story, based in history, is well told, with excellent action sequences. Even in victory these pilots were treated poorly, at least until their skills were truly exposed! This is not a remake of "The Tuskegee Airmen" so don't have that thought going in. A fitting tribute to a phenomenal group of fighting men!

Red Tails delivers the goods! It's got great story, characters, and visual effects! All in all, it had me engaged and entertained completely!
As a long time fan of Black Cinema, it was refreshing to see this type of film on the big screen! Not since Spike Lee's "Miracle at St. Anna" have I enjoyed a cinematic adaptation of Black History!
The entire cast is stellar! And the Wu-Tang Clan's Method Man plays a wise crackin' soldier.
Terence Blanchard's dynamic score helps bring the drama home too!
Remember "Top Gun"? Well, this film takes it to the next level! In the words of Public Enemy: "Brothers Gonna Work It Out!"

In some places the movie was slow, the dialogue was kind of "corny" and some of the acting was "over-acted"; but all in all, it was a good movie in regards to its historical perspective and the action portions and special effects did not disappoint. Thank you George Lucas for stepping up to present and tell this story.

Upon reading the other reviews, I felt pretty much the same way as many others. What could have been a great movie was just ok. I thought heart of the movie just wasn't there. The most believable characters were the veterns actors of Cuba Gooding and Terrance Howard. It was great to see so many young black actors but something was just missing from the writing of the movie.

Finally! A good, action packed, historically factual movie that is captivating and entertaining without vulgarity, excessive violence and nudity in every scene!!!
I read some reviews that criticised the script. I respectfully disagree. This is a movie the whole family can see and enjoy together. It is an opportunity to learn of and take pride in those who came before us.

I wanted to love this movie, but I honestly did not. I felt the same way about it as I did about Star Wars Episodes 1 and 2- great action, bad dialogue. Every time I was watching a dogfight, I was in awe. But I found myself offering 'courtesy laughs' during scenes that were intended for humor, wondering if anyone in the audience was affected by scenes that were meant to inspire emotion, and I spent the majority of time questioning whether the staleness of the film and rigidity of the characters was the fault of the actors or writers (then I remembered Star Wars and blamed the writers).
I have to say this is the first film I've ever seen dealing with the issue of race where hearing the dreaded 'N' word seemed less inciteful, and more necessary to fit the theme.
Having said all that, the action really is fantastic. I left the theatre wanting more of it, and I did feel like I picked a good movie to watch over the weekend.

The writing did not do the story or the special effects justice. Worst dialogue I have ever heard. The very first line in the movie was "Germans, get'em!" From there on it went down hill. This move really shows the low opinion Hollywood has of black movie goers. It was just awful. I was very dissapointed with it and found myself staring at my watch after the thirty minute mark.
