Oliver Stone back to his gritty, outlandish ways

Now this is the kind of film you’d expect from Oliver Stone. Filled with copious amount of gritty, violent action, sex, drugs and Stone’s trademark visual flair, “Savages” is his best work since 1994’s “Natural Born Killers”. It tells the tale of O, a young California girl who lives with her two boyfriends, in the small Laguna Beach kingdom they’ve created for themselves with a lucrative pot business. They’re not all bad, they sell a lot of their product for medicinal purposes and build up villages in third-world countries. In fact, they’re almost ready to get out of the business altogether. Until the queen of a powerful Mexican cartel forces their hand and kidnaps O. The two mostly peace-loving friends have to decide what’s most important to them, and set off on a bloody path of revenge and destruction to rescue O. The film is alive with energy, and the camera captures the sets and locations with a cool sizzle. Most impressive are the characters that Stone and his actors have crafted, all of them unique and quirky and unpredictable. Benicio Del Toro is in near Oscar-worthy form as the leader of a “lawn-care” crew that does a little more than lawn cleanup, as he maniacally twists his mustache. He’s great. And so is Travolta, Kitsch, Johnson, Hayek, and even Lively. The ending is both an exciting, wild twist of a surprise, and a Hollywood cop out. But hey, nobody’s perfect.

This movie had potential, and I was reeled into the storyline between the 3 friends. And Benicio Del Toro worked well with an average script. Otherwise this movie was scattered from beginning to end. At no point in this movie was a brought into the complexity of the situation. I'd wait for it on Dvd.
Cons terrible writing and direction.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Oliver Stone's latest is a slow movie, with characters with implausible relationships. Also, the movie is a mishmash of a paean to love and dope, paired with a gangster yarn. The three principal characters are two stoner guys, who are opposites -- one a warrior, one an egghead -- and who grow great pot. Oh, and they share a girlfriend, and the three nuzzle together cheerfully all the time. Not a speck of jealousy. Evil baddies want to take over their business. Selma Hayek wears a sticks-out-like-a-sore-thumb crappy wig for way too long as she plays the role of gangster mastermind. Where or where is my NoDoz! This one is a tedious mess. You've had some good ones, Oliver, but this one is a dud.

I dont get the chance to see a lot of movies in the theatre, but of lately those that I have seen (which I was really looking forward to viewing) have been for the most part - garbage!
This movie is quite the opposite! Never a huge fan of Oliver Stone films, but this one has made me a believer. Simply put, this is his Stone's best film and by far my favorite. Do yourself a favor and catch this flick. Yes there is some of that gory-ness that Oliver Stone has made famous, but this time it was well placed and fit with the films efforts.
Highly recommend! My favorite in quite some time - definitely best of 2012 so far....

So, who are the savages? This drug dealing tale has both sides believing the others are, but in the end, they all are. The Americans are the "good guys" who become compromised by their success and the intrusion of the Mexican cartel. The twist is their menage a trois that requires a huge suspension of disbelief. Its very stylish with intrigue like a spy story. John Travolta steps away from his usual character to play a corrupt DEA agent playing all sides against the middle. Selma Hayek plays the ruthless drug lord with a soft spot for the daughter who rejects her. The directing is good even if the story feels contrived. While not Stone's finest work, it will hold your attention.

Story- Great
Overall casting- Good
Blake Lively- Aweful actress
Ending- Unrealistic
The story and most of the cast was perfect. This film was brutal as promised and had some great dialog scenes. That being said, the main actress very bad. I could hardly tell if she has any emotions at all. The ending rewind feature was not great, I wish they let it end the original way. I wish they had casted someone else for the lead female role, and they had stuck with the original ending. Beyond that, the film was good. I'd recommend to wait for DVD though.

This is Oliver Stone at his playful best. It isn't a masterpiece, but it is a lot of fun. Stone brings his usual visual flair to the material, and he's helped along by some solid performances from a deep ensemble cast. ...a violent and tough-minded film about characters looking out for their own self-interest no matter who else it may hurt. The movie's great surprise, and delight, is Salma Hayek's Elena, a svelte monster with a Cleopatra haircut who runs the cartel. Gripping film that keeps things exciting by being bloody almost throughout. A must see.

Oliver Stone does a better than decent job with this film. Except for Del Toro all the actors are easy to look at. The story gets you thinking about a lot of the different angles, what if it was legal, why does a rich girl choose to live like this, Best friendships when they are not the best for you, the informants, motherhood and lots more. Too bad the story has so much gore and brutality. I don't know except I will say some of the scenes are haunting and make you wish you didn't go see it. Overall, each character has great complexity and parallels real life people and their life dilemma's.
Great scenery most of the time and in between the blood. Some pretty senseless aggression.
Pros great actors
Cons brutality

"Savages" is about 2 pot growers, Ben (Aaron Johnson) and Chon (Taylor Kitsch) who happens to be an ex-navy seal along with their shared girlfriend (Blake Lively) who face opposition from the Mexican Cartel. The Mexican Cartel wants in on Ben and Chon's business. Ben and Chon don't want to be part of their business, they just want to help people with illnesses who smoke the marajiana they grow and feel better. Ben and Chon have a friend or someone they believe to be their friend who is a DEA Agent (John Travolta). He is suppose to run interference for them but what they don't know is that a member of the Cartel also has his ear and the DEA Agent has his own agenda as well. Additionally, the Cartel doesn't take "NO" for an answer, they take heads!! The story unfolds from there...
The first hour of this movie was great. The second hour not so much. It was chaotic at best!! It's very hard to determine who the real "Snake" in the movie is. There's so many cons going on that it's difficult to determine if there is a good guy or hero.
The highlight of the movie is Salma Hayek who is Elena the leader of the Mexican Cartel. She looks great in her Cleopatra haircut and is very good at being mean and ruthless.
The movie is very bloody, very violent and brutal at times. Lots of nudity, Sex and drug use throughout.
Cons too complex
Yes, I recommend this movie.

this is one of the most inense films ive ever seen. the story is complex and has many layers on top of some incredible cenimatagraphy. its simular to "Blow" but there are less funny, light-hearted parts. this movie is intense from start to finigh with a few funny lines when you least expect them betweem Travolta and del Toro. Great film. it was definately worth going to see.

Savages was a good movie!! It was one of those movies where you have no idea what is gonna happen next, and it is usually something you don't expect. Benecio Del Toro played a huge role and it was magnificant. Blake Lively and the supporting cast were good as well. I give props for Oliver Stone, for making a movie that has fresh ideas, and glorified suspense.
