I've read The Hobbit and the Trilogy of the Lord of The Rings quite a few times, and where the Trilogy movies were adhered to quite well, and succinctly, I found this installment of the Hobbit (1 of 3 for goodness sakes) to be a decent walk-through (or should I say "RUUUUUN" which is quite a bit of what they did...) of the main thrust of the book but with a WHOLE LOT OF Added Information (which knowing the storyline, the lore of Tolkien, etc., looks more to me like trying to stretch the profit margin) that doesn't necessarily ADD to the story line... Knowing that Jackson is a crazed fan though might also be his desire to bring out all the rich detail that supports all of the assumptions taken in the remainder of the Trilogy... We now know WHY/HOW some of the things are that came to pass... It WAS a Good Movie, It would have been an Excellent 4-hour one-shot Movie in kind with the rest of everything... TWO Movies even, But THREE??? It will make a decent although stretched out trilogy in its own right, but I feel that's a bit much... a full 30 - 45 minutes dedicated to the opening part with the Dwarves coming for dinner was JUST a WASTE of time... That time suck certainly could have lead to my distaste for the rest of the balance of time that the movie took... The trolls soon to be turned to stone was even drawn out quite a bit... I was left disappointed... I can see now though where the rest of the movie is going and fear where they'll add more "fluffery"... Will I watch every dang minute of it all though? Of course I will... I'm a Ringer... ~Just Sayin'

The movie was pretty good overall, but the characters are one dimensional compared to Lord of the Rings. There was too much time spent on battles and not enough on the nuances of the book. The troll scene wasn't as scary as it was in the book, and the giant eagle scene was almost an afterthought. My husband, who hadn't read the book, was confused as to what was going on through most of it, so I had to explain it all at the end. I am hoping that the other two are better.
Cons one dimensional characters, didn't stick to the book, not as strong of good vs. evil as l.o.r.

Much more whimsical than the Lord of the Rings Trilogy but a fantastic movie. Visually beautiful and amazing, some of the scenes you feel like you are really flying through mountains. The characters were great, acting great. Very enjoyable, looking forward to the next two.

Critics have been complaining of the 48 fps. I had absolutely no problems watching any part of that movie. Even when the action scenes were fast and complicated. The addition of a couple story lines not in the book molded into the main story very well and seemed prudent. The actors are depicting their characters very well. I HIGHLY recommend this movie in any format.

This was a great rendition of the beginning of the book. There was unexpected humor that made this movie a little different and more light hearted than The Lord of the Rings. There was a slight over use of computer generated grafics for my taste. Definatly left me wanting to see the next installments!

This was a great movie. It was a good depiction of the book and also a great addition to the Peter Jackson collection. It kept the book's childish charms, while giving us some great heart-pounding. I mean, I knew what was going to happen the whole time and I was still gripping my wife's hand as if that would help Bilbo, Thorin, and Company escape the orcs. There were obviously some alterations to the book and I have no objections to any of them. Another big thumbs up for Jackson.

I loved the movie, the action, although there were a few parts that dragged out a bit. We saw the non-3 D version. My husband noted there was something eye straining about the film quality. We are going back to see it in 3 D in a few weeks to compare. I liked how they explained how Bilbo came in possession of the ring. The Dwarf king is a cutie, my 19 year old daughter agrees! We are Hobbits and Dwarfs at heart! Overall we loved the movie and are looking forward to the next one!

i have read these books many times. when i went to see this movie i was unaware that they were making a trilogy out of it. that took me bysuprise. the movie was awsome. they added 6 major scenes not in book, and none disappoint. it was a very quick three hours. it is a little scarier than the book. kids may find orcs a little frigtening (there were none in book). there is somewhat of an ending, but it only makes you want to see next installment. GREAT OVER THE TOP ADAPTION.

If, like myself, you haven't read the Hobbit, the beginning of the movie may feel a little slow, but interesting. Much like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the scenery is over the top wonderful and you can find yourself stairing at the circular doors of the Hobbit hole or the grass so green it almost glows and forget you're also watching a wonderful story unwrap. This movie takes place before the Lord of the Rings and you will recognize many of the characters if you are at all familiar with that franchise.
The Hobbit doesn't follow the same break neck pace that LotR did, mostly because the Producers and Directors were not forced to condence the story. The Hobbit is one book, smaller than each of the LotR books in itself, but they still made 3 movies out of it. Rarely does a book go from book to movie and NOTHING had to be left out.
My only warning is the 170 minute run time. With 20 minutes of previews, a liter of soda and a giant bag of popcorn, you bladder may not like you before it is over!

It's hard to put my finger on it ,but I was not completely satisfied with this film. Maybe its my over-the-top expectations, having loved every thing about the LOTR series, or that the story is being stretched into three parts. I hope the up coming episodes will get better each time as PJ was able to do before.

For those of you old enough to remember the old cartoon movie this will be VERY familiar. Im not sure it should be so long and there are several things that could have been left out to chop it down. But the movie is entertaining and mesmerizing AND magical! Everything you like from the LOTR movies is here..so if you are expecting disappointment..dont look here. A MUST SEE in the theater..there are amazing visuals and sound to be experienced. Probably more than once!

After reading the expert reviews which lead me to believe that the movie would be somewhat long and boring… They could not have been more wrong. The movie moved along nicely with action scenes, character development and great visual landscape that made this for me one of my favorite movies to date. I loved the acting of young Bilbo as a character trying to find his place among this group of adventurers. I will be seeing this movie again on Sunday. There are some great reviews at Forbes.com by Carol Pinchefsky and Erik Kain that do a much better overall explanation than I can.

This is a great beginning for the franchise!! The movie flowed well and was full of history. It maintained the great acting and directing standards we saw from the LOTR and yet was more playful (and rightly so) than its predecessors. I highly recommend this movie!!! I must say, looking at the long length of this film did make me a bit skeptical about how this movie would flow. I thought I might get bored from here to there, but no. This movie brings you in, and doesn't let go of you until the end. I will not spoil anything, but the end is a bit disappointing. However, it did give a clue that there could be a sequel. Now off to the main review. The acting was superb, environments were beautiful and vivid. There are so many amazing things in this movie, I will not be able to talk about them. All I have to say is, go see this film, one of the best movies of all time!

This movie was more than I ever expected! Seeing it in 3D added a depth of realism that was excellent! They did not go over the top with it and make it dorky with the 3D. Instead, it was used sparingly on the things that seemed to appear to be coming out of the screen. Otherwise, it was mostly used for depth of vision.
Some of the dialogue got a little silly but I was able to gloss over it. On the whole, it was excellent. The action was heartpounding and thrilling! The scenery was spectacular! Loved the modelmaking and the special effects. Rivendell was not exactly what I had pictured in my mind's eye. Not elvish enough. I do like the way they have done Gollum. As a fan of the books for decades and having seen all three of the Ring Trilogy films, I can say that this is an added gem to those. Just wish they had released all of The Hobbit at once instead of deciding to make us wait with a 3 parter. Oh well, hope I live that long. The ending of this part was wonderful; I was a little worried about where the breaks would come. Smaug's eye was perfect!

I almost fell asleep twice, there was so much irrelevant garbage stuffed into it. It felt at times like a Michael Bay movie, with the emphasis on gags and visuals rather than focus on character or plot development.

Brilliant casting and a staggering wealth of art detail will bring me back to the theater to watch this one again. Parents should be aware that, though nearly bloodless, the level of violence is high. The tone varied uneasily from slapstick humor to cartoon mayhem to serious pathos; Tolkien's book was similar!
Scholars of Middle-earth will be rewarded by scenes of important events which occurred offstage in the book.
Don't miss Sylvester McCoy as Radagast!

I thought this was a great start for the Hobbit trilogy. My only real con is that it does get a bit slow at times (especially during the first 2/3 or the movie). I think part 1 (An Unexpected Journey) could have easily fit within 2 hours (or even slightly less). However, the great scenery and backdrops keep you entertained during the slow parts :-) I'm ready for the next installment now :-)

The movie was entertaining from an objective perspective. It was a good story, the acting was great, and it had some fun moments.
However if you're trying to compare it to the book, or even worse, the Lord of the Rings, you'll be a little disappointed.
Jackson added more to this story than he did with LOTR, and some of it seemed a little superfluous and changed the story line unnecessarily.
If you are a Lord of the Rings fan you should go see it though, because it connects nicely with the other three and I'd say successfully brings back the Middle Earth we all know and love.
