I enjoyed the additional material especially the necromancer but why did they need to switch the stone throwing trolls to mountains that come alive. That was terrible and unnecessary.

Hastily made, with characters that are too fast, too capable, and unreal in almost everything they do. No realism, in an unrealistic world. You say, that's middle earth; well, I say that the Lord of the Rings was great, and realistic for what it was. In the beginning, the dwarves broke out into a rendition of Oklahoma with eyes in the back of their heads, utilizing the nimble hands of elves, whilst handling dozens of plates and cups at the same time. The rope ladders were a plenty, with harrowing escapes each time they went from disaster to disaster, with the speed of olympic sprinters; finally falling over a hundred yards into the abyss without anyone getting a scratch much less realistic hurt. Even the fight with the trolls was a sham: their ferocity was a joke, and the computer graphics gave unrealitic confusion with no one getting hurt. You say that this is a make believe world, but I say that the Lord of the Rings was right on the money with a realistic look to it. This movie is a "B" movie that has suckered everyone into paying unbelieveable prices out of ignorance. Oh well, they have our money now; now they can sit back an realize, just like they have known for a while now, that even if what they do is no good they still become rich for it. There is a lack of accountability in hollywood now, with some of the worst moves in history being made. No imagination, coupled with greed makes for a lucrative living.
Pros better than nothing i guess, could have dropped ten dollars on the sidewalk

I am not a Middle Earth expert, but I went with two people who are, and none of us liked this movie. The story seemed drawn out and was not the least bit compelling, just a mish-mash of fantastic special effects and a series of ultimately tiresome battle scenes and narrow, impossible escapes, with little coherence. As someone not very familiar with the story, I was simply bored. But my companions who were very familiar with the story indicated that it contradicted the book in important details and also felt it was drawn-out and boring.

I love this book and now the movie. Not only did it meet my expectations, but the story was enhanced beyond my dreams. The sets was beautiful, the actors were amazing, and the special effects were beyond realistic. My absolute favorite chapter in the book is "Riddles in the Dark" I was more than satisfied with the scene in the movie. Thank you Peter Jackson for bringing these stories to life!

The Hobbit was an excellent movie. Great work by the cast, the most memorable performance was by Sylvester McCoy(7th Doctor) as Radagast the Brown. Only quibble was that it took a little long to actually get going on the journey, but once they did it was awesome!

I enjoyed this movie very much. As you can see I gave it 5 out ot 5. The dialogue kept the story moving along and was easy to follow. When the characters spoke in Elvish, the subtitles were easy to read. I felt the special effects were done very well. I don't think there was a single moment where I felt the effects were below expectations. As a fan of the book, I feel the movie did a really nice job of keeping to the story of the book but adding a few little tweaks to it. I understand that books doesn't translate well into a movies and I think they did a great job with it.
Would I recommend this movie: Yes
Re-watch value: Very High
Would I see it again in theaters: Yes
Would I buy the movie when it releases to DVD/Blue ray: Yes
This is a must see for a fan of the book or a fan of the LOTR trilogy.

I really enjoy Tolkien's world and am always happy to be a part of it, and this time was mostly a pleasure. My only issues with it are that the creatures were a little too "cute" for me, I think it was the CGI that made them so. They weren't as menacing as in the previous 3 movies and I think they should be. The other issue is that it didn't quite have the "majesty" of the previous 3 movies. I wasn't overwhelming swept up in the story and scenery as I was before. Maybe this will be better the next time I see it, or in the subsequent films. But really, I enjoyed it very much anyhow. That's all that kept it from getting 5 stars.

This is a terrific movie for any sci-fi fantasy enthusiast. I'd say it follows the book better than most without to many liberties taken. Some of the scenes are a little slow and overdone, while more of the basic adventure could have been included. The movie spent a lot of time on a few high points from the book. Graphics are great as expected. Sound was a little to loud.

The movie I saw showed at 2pm with trailers, and ended at 5pm. It didn't seem like three hours; it felt like we still had more to learn. Which is good and will bring people back. There were just a few scenes that you may wonder "Why are we lingering here so long?", such as meeting all the dwarves scene, and escaping from the goblins. But, I didn't seem to mind because I liked the characters. All of my children have read the book(s). I have not, but was very entertained!

Ever since I saw the cartoon version of the Hobbit, I have wanted them to make it into a feature film! Once I heard they were doing that, I eagerly awaited it's release. I saw it at midnight, opening night. It was worth waiting HOURS for it. I did not do any research before watching the movie, so I was shocked to find out this movie was not the end, but it had just begun! I was both upset and excited :P I can't wait for the next one! :)

I very much enjoyed this film. The characters and music transport you back into familiar surroundings we’ve known from Lord of the Rings. The movie is very well done. It’s quite a lot of fun. I’d say it’s too scary for small children, perhaps those under 9 years of age. Wonderful adventure.

For the first thing: yes, there were things in the movie - characters, settings, events - that did not occur in the book. I thought that rather than take away from the story, they added to it. All of it helped to link to events that do happen later in the book, and the bigger characters that appeared linked the entire movie series to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I thought this was rather brilliant of them.
For the second thing: my roommate found the LotR trilogy to be too long and boring to watch all the way through. Not so with this movie! They kept the action going, all the dialogue and acting was fantastic, and the characters themselves were completely love-able and wonderful! My roommate stayed awake the entire movie, goaded into watching more by each turn of events. I was impressed by this alone.
As for me, I loved the movie. The settings were beautiful and you could see right away why Bilbo wants to return to Rivendale. The king of the dwarves was brought to life in a way the books just couldn't do for me. I loved seeing Gandalf more active as well. He did all kinds of magic.
One con: They still haven't explained Gandalf's connection to the great eagle. I hope they do it....

I'll start by saying it upfront, I wanted to gouge my eyes out from boredom and and stuff cotton in my ears during the first hour or so of this movie. Radagast is downright childish and takes Tolkien's Middle-Earth and gives it a very Narnia-esque feel (that is not a good thing in this sense). The dialogue is extremely forgettable and the story advancement is almost non-existent. The movie picks up significantly during the second hour and the scenes with Gollum and the Orc battles are definite high points. The main flaw of this movie is that Peter Jackson has tried to make this movie the 4th LOTR movie, instead of the 1st Hobbit movie. This movie is good, but not on the level of LOTR. If you are expecting another LOTR, prepare to be dissapointed because while the visuals are there, the story simply is not, nor was it ever intended to be.

tHIS IS THE BEST USE OF THE STORY LINE. THE FILM DEFINITELY LEAVES YOU HANGING ON FOR THE NEXT INSTALLMENT OF THE FILM. The beginning of the book was covered in the lord of the rings trilogy as to how golum became who he is so there was no need to cover it again. The first installment of The Hobbit was fantastic and I appreciated the natural ending of this one leading to part two. The camerawork was very good and the acting amazing. I did not see in 3-D and did not think it was needed to appreciate the special effects and beauty of the location.

This is the only thing I've ever seen that has even a remote chance of improving on the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy.

Very impressed with how this was made into a 3 hour movie. I liked how they filled in background stories on the main characters. Surprised by the new antagonist for Thorin - thought it would take away from the Hobbit, but it worked out very well. The special effects have really come a long way since the Lord of the Rings - which already set the standard. The opening sequence included much fast camera work that worried me as it was cleary filmed fo induce nausea for 3D fans (note: I did not watch in 3D). Thankfully, the director got it out of his system early and move along to normal camera motion until, most notably, the Goblin King scenes. Very much looking forward to the next one.

FANTASTIC! Excellent in every way. Stuck close to the book, just a little added 'dark' side to the story -- but the addition works very well. Also added characters from the 'Silmarillion' - Radagast te Brown and the Necromancer - but again, these additions work very well with the story line. the movie is action packed, and the graphics a FANTASTIC! Peter Jackson has hit another homerun!

This review may contain spoliers*** With a slow lift off the Hobbit does not disappoint fans with it's finish. Action packed throughout the film and well thought out transitions between the Hobbit and LOTR. This movie is a must see for all Hobbit fans regardless of the review you read. Camera angles add to the ever sifting battle scenes between Orcs and Dwarves. I attend movies on a regular basis with a select group of friends. I have already contacted a few back to see this film again. I look forward to the next two movies.

The only disappointment was it ended too soon. At first I thought it was just stretched out to make more money. After seeing this, it would be difficult to fit the whole book/story into one film. I've read the book at least twice as well as the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy. The 1st time was probably in the late '60's or early '70's and the last time was when the 1st Lord of the Rings movie came out to refresh the memory. Great job, Mr. Jackson and crew! Thank YOU!

The movie is almost 3 hours, yet you are lost in the movie and it does not appear that time has passed. The ending leaves you wanting much more and I have just learned that there will be a part 2. Now to wait until the next movie ...
