A shorter complete story with more lighter moments would have done the trick, in my opinion. Instead it was too heavy and too dark, and we are left to wait another year for the sequel?

Such a light change after the Ring Trilogy. There were however a few distractions. The mountain fight scene seemed a little too convenient, with the priciples 'desolving' after the fracas. But the most unusual facet of the story didn't sink in until later when I realised that we had just seen the first Tolkien MUSICAL!
My son's call to watch the movie in 2D was very good, if we had seen it in IMAX, we would have suffered whiplash from the underground scenes.

Movie critics may deride the movie for not being their vision of great art but pay no attention. The beginning was a bit slow but important for setting a mood. Once the travelers were on the road, the time flew by. Could hardly believe the three hours were up when it ended. Bilbo is almost as brilliant as Gollum. Traditional 2D was plenty good for me but friends tell me 3D HFR is the way to go. May have to give it a try.

After reading the book, I was a little concerned knowing that the director was going to spread out the tale in three movies. After watching the movie all I will simply say is: WELL DONE. The ability to expand on some of the smaller points of the book worked out well. The ending was at an appropriate point in the story and the pace of the movie was perfect. Character presentation, especially with the King of the Dwarves, was excellent. While I thought some of the voices for the goblins did not fit, this minor detail did nothing to dampen my overall recommendation of the movie. If you like the books in this series or the film presentations of the Lord of the Rings, I think you will like this movie.

Loved it! Seems to follow the book pretty closely from what I recall, but it's been awhile since I read it. We saw it in 2D, would like to see in the other format to compare. The story was so engrossing that the time flew by. Just like coming to visit old friends. Can't wait for the next installment.

I watched it in 2D first, then in the HFR 3D. The HFR is definitely different and will take a while to get used to. It almost looks too real. The 3D seems to work better with the HFR.
Technology aside, the movie is great. It takes some liberties and doesn't follow the book, but it stays fairly close to it.

The Hobbit was incredible. As soon as you see the Shire you feel you are back home with old friends. It was 3 hours long and we didn't even realize it until the ending credits. The special effects were out of this world. I'm always amazed when I see the computer generated characters and don't think of them that way...if that makes sense. The story is awesome, you leave feeling ready for battle and talk of the next installments. It is a welcome home for all of us LOTR fans. I for one will once again be first in line....

I've heard/read a lot of people say that 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' was too silly and campy in comparison to 'The Lord of the Rings' films. If you feel this way, you're totally MISSING THE POINT. Not only is the original book a silly story for children (written long before even the first draft of 'LotR' was conceived), within the world of the film, IT'S A STORY BILBO IS WRITING FOR FRODO; he's intentionally exaggerating and hamming things up to make a funny story for his nephew. The film is NOT a suspension-of-disbelief alternative reality (except at the very beginning, with the elderly Bilbo) like 'LotR' is; it's a story-within-a-story. It's easy for viewers to forget this, because director Jackson neglected to flash back to Bilbo at his writing desk at the end, to ground viewers back in the "plausible reality layer" between the viewer and the tall tale featuring the young Bilbo. You can't expect 'The Hobbit' to be anything but a fairytale, since that's what Tolkien wrote.
Pros great story, awesome effects, beautiful design, epic scope, good mix of drama and humor
Cons slow, strayed too far from original novel
Yes, I recommend this movie.

As a stand-alone movie it was okay. Hopefully, as part of the series it'll be closer to a 4 or 5. I didn't care for how the story was split up and subsequently filled in. The movie seemed a bit choppy and elongated. I'd have preferred one 6+ hour movie if that's would it would've taken.

This was the Hobbit of my dreams, plus many things I could not have dreamed. The movie a beautiful and breathtaking journey through Middle-Earth. It often follows the book verbatim, but then varies a bit in all good ways. I enjoyed the back stories and fleshing out of the characters.
Martin Freeman is perfect as Bilbo Baggins. Unsure and brave. Selfish and selfless. Bumbling and adept. When reading the book, I could never get a clear picture of each dwarf. They seemed mostly an indistinguishably group. The movie turns them into individuals. No one more so than Thorin Oakenshield.
Richard Armitage as Thorin steals the show. He fills the screen with Thorin's stalwart determination and courage. Thorin bears the weight of the past and his people's future like a mantle on his large shoulders. He is leader, classic hero and even king. The kind that inspire men (or dwarves, hobbits and wizards) to go into battle under the most unfavorable odds and believe in victory.
One of the poignant moments in the film is when he and the dwarf cast sing of the Misty Mountains. It is beautiful, low and primal.
I was not happy when I heard they were splitting the Hobbit into three movies, but after seeing this movie, I am glad they did, because I do not want to miss a single detail, image or tidbit of the story told on screen.

A bit long, less than spectacular music, story hard to follow without having read the book, and even then a bit confusing. But the scenery is gorgeous and the action build towards a future climax, strong, and well paced. Although, not sure it is enough to hold our attention for a full year.

Was pleasantly "shocked" at how good this movie was after reading some of the less favorable reviews. Loved the way this movie is intertwined with the Lord of the Rings Trilogy--in many ways (characters, mood, music, themes etc.) Tolkien's world of middle earth is vast and complex and everything is related to events that occurred in bygone eras. The more you read and know about this "world" the more you will appreciate what Jackson is doing with "The Hobbit".
Was wondering if I could accept a new Hobbit--after the outstanding performances of Elijah Wood and Sean Astin in The LOTR--but, immediately, I could see that Martin Freeman was an inspired choice to play Bilbo Baggins. The artwork, special effects, music, lighting was superb. I admit that I saw it in 2-D. I don't like 3-D. It gives me motion sickness. Perhaps some of the more negative reviews were from critics who viewed the 3-D version. The character of Radagast may not have been my favorite, but he is a far cry from the abominable Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars movies.
The story was inspiring and emotionally satisfying. The build up for the next chapter was skillfully done and left me with yearning for the next movie. Do we have to wait a whole year???

I have not seen the other movies and didn't really feel like I needed to know a bunch of back story to enjoy the movie, though I am sure if I had seen them, the movie's storyline would have been that much better.
I really enjoyed this movie, I recommend you see it.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors

There are some issues with this movie that cause me to give it 4 out of 5 stars. First, the story doesn't quite follow the book very precisely. Most of us knew that going in. Second, there are spots in the 2D version that I watched where the CGI effects were very obvious. The primary example of this was during the scene when the Dwarven party was captured by the goblins and they made their escape on a roller coaster-esque ride on the wooden platform to the bottom of the cavern. These and other flaws aside, it was a fun ride following a well known story. Me and, my friends who watched it with me, were pleased overall with the movie and will likely go to see one of the 3D versions (still trying to decide which). if you're a hihg-fantasy fan, you should enjoy this movie despite some shortcomings.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Cons obvious cgi scenes
Yes, I recommend this movie.

It was a great film, and exceeded my expectations. However, some of the action scenes went by so quickly that it was confusing and hard to focus on anything in particular.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, great gollum/smeagol scene
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Very entertaining fantasy storytelling. Held my attention from beginning to end. Nice to see some of the "old" faces from the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Excellent special effects. Great cinematography. Due to some scenes of intensity and violence, this is not for young children, however.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
