As a lover of the LOTR trilogy, this movie did not come close to expectations...but then, knowing the story already, my expectations should not have been as good as LOTR as this story is not as good. I was disappointed in the special effects. I found them worse than the original movies and dialogue to be much more cheeky. The fight scenes were extremely unrealistic and over the top. This movie was just okay. Since it is unfinished until all the other movies are complete it is unfair to judge this movie stand-alone, but if you did, it is average at best and does not acheive the level of the LOTR movies.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This has to be one of the most disapointing Movies i have seen, the actores were great, special effects were great but the story was the worst i had ever seen. I almost fell asleep three times wondering where this film was going. the story made no sense in a lot of the scenes and the end left you wondering if this is a triligy God help the next two films. They better put themselves in the position of the people that pay a fortune to see a movie and be entertained, not to be bored and fall asleep trying to make sense of the story.
Pros great actors
Cons slow
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I saw this at the midnight showing and loved it. Now as you all know there have been very mixed reviews on the first installment of the hobbit trilogy. First off it is not The Lord of the Rings so don't expect watching another one of those. It is way lighter in it's tone and there is just more comedy in it in general. This was fifty years before LOTR, Sauron hasn't got to his full power yet as he does in LOTR, and I think in the next two movies they will show more of how he came back which sounds good. It is a long movie, but if you just are in the mindset of a lighter adventure I think you are going to love An Unexpected Journey. A little slow starting out but I actually enjoyed it. The last half of the movie is epic as any middle earth movie should be, and I'm very glad Peter Jackson is doing the whole series. Martin Freeman was great along with Andy Serkis and all of the acting. A lot of cool things that do tie into LOTR which I enjoyed. Awesome movie and I am pumped for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Which is going to be even better-I have a feeling.
Pros great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

It was a little more light hearted than the Lord of the Rings movies. I rather enjoyed how long and detailed it was. I saw it in 3D and regular, and found the 3D did not add too much to the story. Well worth the money in the theatre.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, more gandalf magic than lor
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I went into this film with DREAD--not really sure if Peter Jackason might have dropped the ball like in King Kong where he ran the movie way too long. Then the announcement this was going to be done in three movies really made my hopes sag. But Santa was very generous and brought us a fabulous gift of a return to Middle Earth and the material added is done so well and is from the story itself that it works and was as gratifying as the Lord of The Rings was to this Tolkien fan. The added material of the background stories and characters works extremely well. Beautifully done. Cinematography is once again stunning. The characters are so good. Especially like the Wizard with the rabbit pulled sleigh. Fantastic movie. I've seen it twice--took a friend the second time as a holiday gift. I recomend the extra HD 3D for the best picture. IMax get's blurry in some of the rich, complex scenes and the picture and 3D was flawless on the smaller extra HD 3D, Whatever you choose, I believe that if you enjoyed Lord of the Rings triology and think it did justice to the books, then I believe you'll enjoy this as much. I will go for a third time. I really felt like I'd been withdrawing from the Lord of the Rings movies--can't wait to see Smaug in action.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, cinematography/art work
Cons imax 3d a bit blurry in some scenes
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The action was over the top-ridiculous. There were some scenes that were exaggerated leaving the really important scenes, that were critical for the overall theme of the book, weak. The movie ended in the middle. It didn't leave you wanting more; it left you exasperated that it ended without an end and without making a single point. Additionally, there were a couple of slap stick lines that just didn't fit. I will not see any of the other movies and will think twice before seeing anything from this production company. I feel ripped off.
Cons weak thematically, great book- weak movie
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I was afraid that this 1st movie would have next to nothing interesting and drag out and that I would be jostling in my seat ready to leave. Never have I been so wrong about anything in my life! It had many things from the book and even from extra writings of Tolkien to keep me interested and plenty of battles to keep me intrigued. I was also shocked they actually put some songs from the book into the movie, while it threw me off at first it was done really well. I went back the following weekend and saw it again, I liked it even better the 2nd time around!!
Pros great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.
