First time we've seen a 3d movie at the IMAX & it's well worth the extra money. The story is great and the special effects, acting and direction are top rated. We recommend it to all our friends and especially watching it in 3D!

Special effects were ok - nothing out of the ordinary - pace was very slow (2.5 hrs) - dragged out forever -
I think they could have made the movie 1.5 hrs and kicked up the action a notch -
I would wait until it comes out on DVD or tv
Cons slow
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Peter Jackson had to follow the storyline from "The Hobbit", of course, but the exposition took way too long to set up. An hour into the flick and we hadn't even left Bag End yet! I don't know if it was because of the speedier film technique he used but the fight/chase sequences were too fast-paced to see the details. After 2 3/4 hours, I stll can only name 4 of the 13 dwarves-- we could have used something other than visuals to distinguish their characters. Some of the backgrounds looked painted, even though they had actual New Zealand scenery to use-- the cinematography was nowhere near that of the LOTR trilogy. 3-D was just a distraction. But, being a "Ringer", I still enjoyed the movie. It was remarkable even with its "flaws".
Cons slow, 3-d, hyper fight/chase scenes
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The movie starts with a pretension that says, "yeah, we know we've built a blockbuster - and we're happy with ourselves." The beginning of the story stutters around a bit, then gets going once they get on the trail. It could be argued that it needed some back story so we could understand the characters with a depth that does *some* justice to actually reading the book. My wife and I agreed that the story really explodes and stays on track around halfway through, probably an hour in.
The effects are, of course, amazing. This isn't a puppet movie of yesteryear. In 3D along with the mighty resolution of today's CGI, Golem is very creepy. The graphics are so good that you can see corneal abrasions when the light hits his eyes just right...wild stuff, man.
Occasionally, as pointed out by my other half, it seemed that some of the dwarves and Bilbo were different sizes when standing next to Gandalf. I'm didn't notice this, but I have to give this mention.
The 3D was well done for the most part. It didn't leap out of the screen like some of the espionage-for-kids movies. Some of the action was very hard to follow because it was so quick, but I'm not sure it had anything to do with the 3D. It was just too darn fast to follow. I may have to go back and see it in 2D so I can tell if it was the 3D effect causing the blur or not.
After the movie, my wife commented on how the music was the same as the last three movies, as well as the backdrop. It *did* seem like they were walking the same trails on the same mountains as the first three movies, but, again, they *are* in the same Middle Earth. I guess that being in the same location necessitates the need for the same march symphonies. I didn't appreciate the background music as it did seem tired.
The songs that the dwarves sang were good if not really good. I enjoyed them fully. They make me want the soundtrack in spite of the background music.
The acting was good, but not Oscar worthy. For some reason, I expected a little better out of Martin Freeman. He seemed to be trying to remember to be a Hobbit while acting. There just wasn't the blur of reality that leads one into that suspension of disbelief. I think that this could be said of Ian McKellen, too. When compared to The Lord Of The Rings, it just doesn't envelope you like expected.
What made the movie boost from good to great, for me, was the special effects, cinematography, and the art direction. They were all spectacular. If everything else was a bit better, then this could have been an *excellent* movie, but it did fall short in ways that I felt it shouldn't. It didn't quite live up to the hype, especially because the Lord Of The Rings series was so incredible. I think that Peter Jackson was resting on the laurels of his previous successes.
Pros great story, incredible effects
Cons action hard to follow, acting weak
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I've never read any of the books, so these movies are my key to Tolkien, and they continue to be amazing and (according to fans) accurate. The 3D version was rich with depth and color, and it wasn't played up with cheap effects, relying instead on imagery and well-crafted scenes to make it work.
I did find a few scenes were too long, and possibly this film could have shaved ten minutes or so, but all the performances were stellar (special kudos to Sir Christopher Lee, making a return as Saruman, bouncing off Ian McKellan's Gandalf at an elven roundtable meeting). I'll see it twice.
Pros great story, great actors, good 3d usage
Cons too long
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Lord of the rings trilogy is a classic specially Return of the King. The first film of the Hobbit fails in comparison but it is still entertaining and worth watching. I like the 3D version and it was shot in 70mm film, really crisp and visually nice. I can't wait for the next adventures of Bilbo

What a let down. Tolkein would be appalled. Scene after scene that isn't in the book! This is a nice movie and the 3D special effects are outstanding. But this is NOT a movie based on the book. It is a movie that very loosely resembles the book. There are not one armed orcs, bunny rabbit sleds and wackadoo brown wizards. And these scenes are longer than the scenes that ARE in the book! Sad, very sad. Wait for the DVD.
Pros great special effects

It may be 2 hours and 45 minutes, but it certainly doesn't drag anywhere except in the setup before they leave the Shire.
Would like it if they could commit to being a comedy with dramatic moments or a dramatic movie with comedic moments, though.
The 3D feels natural, and speaking as someone who has suffered from migraines for 3 years, it didn't hurt. The 3D is not gimmicky, where it's there for 5 seconds, it's always popping the creatures of Middle Earth out into the audience.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors

If anyone has read The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, they will see that this movie does the book justice just at the LOTR movies did their books justice. An Unexpected Journey is the first of three movies that will not only cover the main story of Bilbo Baggins, but also the side quests of Gandolf that were spoken of in the epilogue of The Hobbit.
However, we must always remember that books have the ability to contain way more detailed information and story-line than movies because they are structured to do so. Movies attempt to portray the books but are limited with time and other various resources.
Still, this movie was tops in casting, props, world building, action sequences, and CG!
Pros great story
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Overall this movie is amazing. The camera work, acting and special effects are, if anything, better than the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I had to take some points off on story because of the addition of plot lines from another of Tolkein's books, the Sillmarillion. That being said, the additions made it easier to understand some of the plot lines in the Hobbit and in the Lord of the Rings. These additions were tastefully done and almost seamlessly inserted in the movie. At times the movie moves a little slow but knowing the Tolkein works I can say that the slowdown was necessary and kept to a minimum. I would recommend this movie both for newcomers to the Tolkein world and to Tolkein enthusiasts.
Pros great story, great actors

Movie critics are totally wrong on this one. They are all just taking advantage of the opportunity to title their critique something like "An Unexpected (Flop, Failure, Etc...)" in order to shock people into reading their crapola. I'm a Tolkien fan and I'm not interested in a 1.5 hour "Hollywood" experience. Each one of Tolkien's books should have been turned into three 3-hour movies with the appendices woven in (just like this one!). It is exactly the kind of detail and complexity a true fan wants. More names, places, and tales. The appendices also allow the movie to retain a darker and more dangerous feel. Less like the children's book that it has been called and more like the trilogy which we like. Go see it! If you live in Colorado or Washington then make sure you take advantage of the new laws before you enter the theatre.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, it has two more parts!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Great Movie....read the book, but it's been a while. Agree with other reviewer about actors clothes and hair being clean at end of journey.....not as much attention to detail as The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I won't see the next one in 3D. The action sequences and fast panning camera shots were too hard to focus on. Good movie for Lord of the Rings fans...might be a bit boring to anyone who hasn't seen the original movies.

It is a great story. ...nicely done here. It is not as "dark" as fellowship as it is a different kind of story with similar characters.
I feel that it definitely makes you care about the main characters and makes you want them to grow... It isn't as wonderful as reading the books, but as a movie, I would highly recommend it.

Since I'm a Tolkein fan and a fan of LOTR (Peter Jackson), I had high expectations. The movie did not fail. I was glued to my seat for nearly 3 hours. I will see it again, but at a different theater.
The movie theater (Cinemagic) had the sound too low making it difficult to hear some of the conversations. When I spoke to an employee after the show, she said it was because they feared the noise from the battles would be too loud & she would tell the manager about my comments.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

we loved it! The back story was unnecessary, but so well done that it added to the story. I was delighted with the Radaghast scenes even though they were really not needed. As a life ling fan of the book I noticed everything that was not in the original story, but didn't mind at all. Peter Jackson has done a great job with introducing us to all the other creatures of Middle Earth. Loved the Goblin King. We especially liked the teasers of Smaug and the individuality of the dwarves. The transformation of Old Bilbo to young Bilbo with the pipe smoke was fantastic.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors

The Hobbit is the best book I ever read. That's why this got 3 stars and not 1. The scenery looked too fake. The actions did not look believable. At times I thought I was watching the 3 stooges.
Lord of the rings was serious and yet had some well placed comedy. Not so with the Hobbit. The movie looks like it's geared towards the 10 year old group.
At the end of a long journey, Bilbo emerges with freshly shampooed hair and clean clothes . Not like the other movies where they were dirty with dirty stringy hair.
I hope the other movies are not going to use the new fast frame technology, because I for one did not like it.
Ten years of waiting for this one movie and I am really disappointed.

Fantastic. Can't wait for the extended version!! Was not too long. Background story (for those whom have not read the books) was necessary, and also helped those of us who have not read the stories in 40 yrs. 3D a little tricky on the quick pans, but on steady jobs was remarkable. Taking son and daughter to see it now. Warning! Don't take a soda with you! You'll miss something.
