Spoiler alert: It's Been Done. Spectacular New Zealand landscapes -- done. Weird faux-foreign languages that the characters speak for one or two sentences, with subtitles, before inexplicably switching to English -- done. Gruesome computer-generated villains -- done. Gollum -- done to death. By the way, if ANY character needs subtitles, it's Gollum.
"The Lord of the Rings" is a spacious literary trilogy with more than enough background, characters and action to fill three long movies. "The Hobbit" is a small volume, a bit of juvenilia, yet it's being stretched to fill at least two movies, and that just doesn't work. Example: the meeting of the dwarves in Underhill, which should have taken two minutes of screen time, was dragged out for ten. A couple of teens sitting in front of me got up and left. I almost followed them.
The dialogue too frequently lapses into inanity. "Kill the dwarvish scum!" Yes, please.
There are massive holes in the plot. Here's an example from the last reel; Bilbo has already discovered that wearing The Ring confers invisibility, yet he's fully visible as he goes into battle with the chief Orc (Troll, Ghoul, whatever). I'm screaming to myself, "Put on the ring, idiot!"
And how does the company of pint-sized heroes escape? On the backs of giant eagles! I mean, why not? It worked in The Ring, so dust it off and use it again. Personal aside to the screenwriters: I feel your pain. Trying to turn nothing into something must be agonizing.
Did I like ANYTHING about the movie? Well, the characters were interesting, and the actors were talented. It's a shame they didn't have a better script.
In the 35 years since "Star Wars IV," FX have become a cliche. It's now expected that anything a producer can imagine, can be shown on the screen. Eye candy isn't sweet any more. It counts for nothing. What counts is the story. And that's what "The Hobbit" does not have.
Cons slow, exploitative, derivative, boring
No, I do not recommend this movie.

My verdict for The Hobbit: Enjoyable first 25 minutes and fascinating last 90 minutes (excluding the major Goblin which is sort of a mix of absurd and ridiculous). The rest needs editing BIG TIME! It is much lighter, lacks the elegance, grandeur and sense of doom that made The Lords of the Rings Trilogy so involving and majestic. The trolls sequence is an embarrassment. They mimic the Three Stooges though not funny at all. Once the dwarfs, et al, meet the first Orcs, the movie kicks in and in what a way! Overall, more is not always better, though for fans like me, I could see it again. (Disclosure: I've seen LOTR Trilogy more than 12 times and consider The Return of the King as one of my top three favorite movies of all time). Closing remarks: There is a sense of "déjà vu" throughout the movie that I am not sure if I am too happy to return to Middle Earth or I'd rather remember LOTR movies on their own. Maybe on a second viewing I can clarify my mixed bag of emotions.
Pros great story, great actors, loved the dwarfs, fascinating last 90 mins, gollum's segment a gem, 3d well used, would see it again
Cons slow, head of goblins - a new jabba the hut, trolls - an embarrassment, editing needed, lacks the elegance grandeur and impact of lotr

I was in awe of every aspect of this movie. I haven't read the books and being a HUGE Lord of the Rings trilogy fan the only thing I had a hard time with was missing the characters from the first 3, but the characters in this and I assume the rest of the trilogy quickly become lovable. The effects are so incredible it's worth seeing just for those aspects! I was blown away but expected nothing less from this series. Some other reviews note that it was "slow". I've noticed that sometimes it's necessary in order to introduce new characters and establish the story. A little slow in the beginning, but the rest was non stop action and intense scenes (even when there wasn't intense action) so I didn't feel it was unnecessary or too slow.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I first read The Hobbit 51 years ago, and have been rereading it, both silently and aloud, teaching it, writing about it and recently organized a Hobbitfest about it since then. I thoroughly enjoyed myself on opening night, although at times I started and said "What! How can they do it that way? But HE doesn't say that then..." etc. I imagine that much of the rest of the audience either hadn't read the book or had done so so many years before that they were surprised when, for example, Bilbo takes off the ring and appears among the astonished dwarves and so on. I think the movie was great for people who hadn't read the book; for those of us who have and have immersed ourselves in it, there are some things we must resolve ourselves to--I will see the movie at least a couple more times before 2013--because, after all, it is a MOVIE rather than a book. Recommended for all who love fantasy. The Stone Giants, the Misty Mountains Goblin King, and the sly small glimpse of Smaug are great. The dwarves are emo biker thugs. Peter Jackson's Bilbo is much less of a wimp than his Frodo was.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, great scenery
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The theater was having some problems with a new system and the hard drive crashed. 3D wasn't available so I can't comment on it. Been waiting a long time for the movie and it did NOT disappoint. Yes, some places did seem a bit slow, but Jackson is telling more of the story. The Hobbit book and this movie are a bit (so far) more light-hearted than LOTR. If you are a real stickler for the book, you might be disappointed, but push that to one side and be entertained. This is fantasy at its very, very best. The depth of the characters, details, and settings are so real that you feel as if you are in the movie. Great! (I'd love to live in Rivendell personally.) Sit back, relax and enjoy the incredible story-telling magic.

Since the announcement of the film I knew I wanted to be there on opening day. I got to the theater for the first "sane" showing ;-) an hour early, anticipating a long line. Oddly enough I was the first one to walk into the theater! About forty-five others followed me. I guess the "blue flu" epidemic had not arrived yet in my region. :-)
I expected the movie to be made at a high level, given the fact that Peter Jackson returned as director. On most counts I believe he delivered. Cinematography was excellent, as were special effects, although the latter might have been overdone at times. The warnings about the increased 3D frame rate causing potential headaches proved unfounded, at least for me. Quite a bit of the music is derived from the Lord of the Rings cycle but there are some really nice additions to the score as well.
Something happened as I watched the story unfold which I did not expect I would do...I glanced at my watch a little less than halfway through. That may have been my reaction to what seemed, IMO, to be a very slow pacing of the opening. I suspect that Jackson wanted to spend more time defining the "pre-hero" Bilbo before showing him transformed by picture's end. What the screenplay failed to do was give us a more detailed insight into most of the dwarfs that come unannounced at Bilbo's doorstep.
Another oddity was seeing Frodo, Gollum and Saruman (I suppose Gandolf could be added to the list) appear older in what is essentially a prequel. In addition, it struck me as strange that Gollum's evil nature is much more defined here than in the trilogy, where he appears far more conflicted when first introduced.
Goblin Town looks perhaps too much like the underground haunts of the Orcs. I was amused by the Goblin king's appearance. I would call him Peter Jackson's answer to Jabba the Hutt. The dialog immediately preceding the king's demise was almost laughable. I will not spoil it for by revealing it here. :-)
Despite these observations I still would recommend this movie, and I look forward to seeing the remaining two sequels of this new trilogy.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I went opining night to see the Hobbit at Rave Cinemas at Buckland Hills in Manchester Ct. I was very surprised to find that the theater was not pack at all and there was additional setting in the screen room. But I'm not here to talk about the theater I am here to tell you about the move. I have read some reviews about this movie on how it was a little bit more "juvenile" than the Lord of the Rings. All I have to say to that is the Hobbit is a kids book. I thought the way they portrayed a lot of the characters was amazing and worked well even if it was not apart of the book. I found the movie to be a little more darker than that Lord of the Rings like the amount of violence and death inserted into the movie. But the comedy that Peter Jackson added into the movie made up for the darkness. Yes the Orcs are hairy instead of slimy but they made it work! The movie at times made me sit at the edge of my chair and at times made me laugh hard enough to almost make me shed some tears. I would definitely recommend this movie to people from ages 12 and up!

Well I'm not a big fan of 3 hour movies or movies in 3D, but I have an 11 year old son who wanted to see this movie, so I was game. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. The 3 hours went by quickly and the art direction was outstanding. I read the book a thousand years ago so I didn't remember much of the story, but it was really well done and entertaining. It is definitely worth seeing and truly enjoyable.

As usual, Peter Jackson's focus on character development pays off, with a wonderfully emotional climax. The movie's expansive natural scenery, sets, and lighting was much more beautiful and Avatar-like than I remember it in LOR. And a decade of advancements in animation technology was also evident in the very realistic giants, goblins, and wargs
Going in, I was skeptical about whether I could become emotionally invested and bonded to a new band of brothers -- but I shouldn't have worried, because casting and direction seems to be Mr. Jackson's specialty.
That's all I'll say, because it's best going into the theater with no expectations and fresh eyes.

To be fair, I'm not a fan of the Lord Of The Rings series, so I'm not the best person to be rating this movie. I found many parts of the movie to be boring (I actually dozed off during some non-action scenes). The 3D special effects were really good---I'd say this was a great advertisement for 3D movies/TV. Having said all that, I think people who love the books and previous movies from this series will love it! The story of Good triumphing over Evil is always a good thing----and as you will note, the door was left open for the next movie in the series!!
Pros great story, great actors, outstanding 3d effects
Cons some tedious conversational parts
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The film was very well done. Every element from the story was beautifully rendered in the film. Characters are spot on and ones we know and love from the Lord of the Ring franchise are back again. Ian McKellan is wonderful as Gandalf the Grey as are Martin Freeman and Richard Armitage in their respective roles. I enjoyed the movie from beginning to end and can't wait to see its conclusion!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

While overall the film did not feel like the 2h46m it was, there were a few points in which the pace lagged, most noticeably the long and frequent battle scenes. In a few opening sequences the camera panned a bit too quickly for viewing in 3D, and there was some blurriness. Overall, great multi-layered story, fine performances, a great job bringing this imaginary world and its creatures to life. And some genuinely moving scenes.
Pros great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Hobbit was a fun movie but may not be for everyone. Fans of the previous movies will appreciate it, but may still wonder why so much time is spent in Hobbiton (nearly the first hour of the movie). Once the group gets on the road, things pick up a bit but there remain a few departures that still slow the pace down.
It's hard to imagine someone new to the series or Tolkien really enjoying this movie. They will likely be bored silly and fall asleep while the good parts unfold. However, those who do make it to the end of the film are rewarded with the riddle scene with Golum, which is fantastically written and performed.
Bottom line, great acting, visual effects, great music and stunning scenery save the movie from an average or lower rating.
Pros great actors, visually stunning
Cons slow
Yes, I recommend this movie.

If you're a geek, fan, or critic and know the story then you should be pleased. There was a lot of work to follow such a close interpretation...looking forward to the next film next year.

It was actually better than I expected. The 3D was somewhat distracting at first. The pre-release hype let me to believe the 3D was going to be significantly better. Perhaps the theatre I visited did not have the proper equipment to take full advantage of the original filming. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and anticipate the next release.

Yes, I recommend this movie.

I liked the way they tied this movie to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The special effects were great. I highly suggest spending the couple of extra dollars to see it in 3D.

Don't waste your money on this, it's terrible!! It is an insult to JRR. It starts with a hammy performance by bilbo baggins (like a bad comedy) and just doesn't stop. For a minute I actually thought it was a musical....so bad and badly acted....yuck!
No, I do not recommend this movie.
