We are allowed to partake in the eerie, macabre discovery of its history and horrors through the eyes of our main character played very well by Harry Potter himself - Daniel Radcliffe. The movie is creepy, dark, scary, etc and it has all the right cobwebs in all the right places BUT I felt a bit disappointed until the final 15 minutes. It is the final act and the end of the movie that made it an easy to recommend horror film. No spoilers here. One old dusty, cobweb laden rhino horn up.

Had just enough suspense & scary for adults, the women next to us screamed a couple of times. My preteen daughter thought it was great even though she buried her head a couple of times. The teen girls in front of us were squealing in fright. Great use of indirect subtle shadows to keep your attention. Give this one a chance.

If you like old fashioned scary movies this one is for you. It is a pure ghost story in gothic style with all necessary elements for a convincing haunting. Dark, gloomy "Wuthering Heights" style atmosphere is complete with an old mansion, storms, brooding townfolk. Certain scenes made us jump as we fought the urge to cover our eyes too. There are often very chilling moments just from simple touches...no fancy special effects, so all the more realistic and frightening. Daniel Radcliffe is very believeable in his role as Arthur and so well done you will not think about "Harry" once during this movie. So if you believe in ghosts see this movie, and if you don't see it anyway as you may change your mind afterward. Please leave younger children at home. Not very restful sleep for any of us since movie!

My husband and I really liked this movie! Daniel Radcliffe was very believable in his roll of Aurthor Kipps. He seems right at home playing a father and the emotion seems real around his "son" and "wife". We found the movie to be suspenseful and a bit creepy, making us jump every few minutes. It wasn't gory. From early on, your curiousity is peeked by how the villiagers react to Aurthor's arrival. The ending was a bit unexpected and to be honest I wasn't really sure how I felt about it; happy and sad. Overall we thought it was very well done; I'd go to see it again. It was a good old fashion ghost story!

I had to go alone. I took my Delta airline blanket - just in case. I had read the book and, of course, there are certain plot lines that are completely different than the book. I don't think it took away from the story and in some ways they actually made the characters more sympathetic. It's always hard to watch a thriller when you care about the characters. The actors were, I thought, believable in their roles. They played fear and downright terror without going too far. One line at the top of the film bothered me, when Arthur Kipps looks at his son and tells him he looks so much like his mother. Seemed trite and unnecessary. Radcliffe has a very distinctive look and this beautiful child has red hair (and really does look like his mother, who was the director of the production of Equus Radcliffe starred in a few years back). It seemed superfluous since the little boy really looks nothing like Radcliffe. The tension was perfection, I thought I knew when I'd see the ghost and then when I didn't, I'd loosen up and BAM! there she was! That was fun! I loved the film. I had fun having the bejeezus scared out of me. The ending was a bit of a surprize and I'm not sure how I felt about it since it was so different from the book, but I'll let you come to your own conclusions about it. I'd be interested in reading the script for the stage play that was made of this to see how they compare. Also, and this wasn't really addressed in the novel, either, I wonder how old the woman (whose paperwork Kipps is sent to go through) was when she died. Seems to me, with a ghost in my house that was so angry with me, I'd tip the eff outta there. How long did she survive in that house? Just a thought. The story of these tormented people is the reason to see this film. There's not a lot of gore (which I prefer) and lots of psycho tension (which is always scarier).

Well first off I went in seeing this movie with no high expectation. That being said I thought the movie was well acted and the story line was pretty solid. Radcliff is very believable in this role, the setting at the Marsh House was spooky and real at the same time. Liked the movie and the story.
