It's an excellent try of explaining. However there's a few things that could of been explained I.e. the ruby slippers. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and highly recommend it to all, young and old.

This one will be best if seen in a theater. It will lose much of it's visual impact on the TV at home. The story introduces us to the main characters and reaches its' end about 15 years before Dorothy Gale will crash land on a witch. The art direction and the opening titles are very good. Several directors have tried to make movies from the Baum stories but would be handicapped by the characters and how to bring them to life on the screen. Computers have solved that. Good job Mr. Raimi!

Only saving grace to movie is the special effects. Acting and dialogue was bad; although this should be expected considering sci-fi/fantasy genre. If you have kids, wait for DVD or Netflix; not worth the time and effort to go in movie theater for over 2 hours.

Too scary for the young ones and too slow and boring for the oldsters? grade-school perfect but by then this family movie may not be seen by the family together (i.e., have you ever had teenagers?! :).

I liked this movie. I did. But it just wasn't a classic, obviously, and isn't going to be on my top 10 list of 2013 for movies or anything, but I did, however, enjoy it. The story intrigued me with the three witches, and everything. James Franco did a great job as Oz I thought, and the three witches did fine. I did confused, kind of, with the three witches, for some reason, maybe it was just because I haven't seen The Wizard of Oz in a long time, or my lack of reading the book by L. Frank Baum. Sam Raimi did a fine job directing. Another problem I did have was, maybe it was just me, but I got annoyed with Mila Kunis' character near the end. The special effects were fine, but they were kiddish, you could say, because it is PG and it is really colorful, and so on, but that didn't really bother me. It did get a little slow by the end, as well, but it wasn't that bad. Overall, it is a good time with your family at your local movie theater.

Not my kind of movie. I guess that doesn't make it bad. Just not for me. The theater was packed at a 5:00 showing. Lots of kids, popcorn and texting going on.
Not the actors best rolls. Special effects were good. I saw it in 2D as I don't care for 3D (too hard for these old eyes to focus).
The movie is a little over two hours but seems longer. Probably a descent family movie.

What a great family movie. There were some catch-you-off-guard moments that might scare little ones but my 9 & 6 year olds had a great time with it. There wasn't any inappropriate language or content, great camera work and effects and beautiful costuming. A fun movie to watch as a family.

So glad they went with James Franco for this role. While I love Johnny Depp and Robert Downey, I truly believe James Franco was the right choice!! I love the OZ story and have waited a lifetime to see another movie, and I was not disappointed. Packed theater applauded when it was over. Great for the whole family!!!

This movie was very entertaining. The special effects were great, as well as the acting. The story helps put together just how the wizard got to OZ as well as the story of the good and evil witches. Loved the movie and would enjoy seeing sequels, but I needt o clear up a few things for some of the other reviewers-
1- The 1939 film was not the original. The original Oz film was made in 1910. The 39 version was itself a remake.
2- This is not a direct prequel to the Judy Garland film. This is the reboot prequel, like Batman Begins. Disney is creating their own version of things. The 39 film was about a girl having a dream that she wakes up from. This is closer to the books. This is about Oz being a real world set in an alternate reality rather than being a dream.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie had the potential to be fantastic, but the leading man and protagonist was weak. Perhaps if Robert Downey Jr. had been able to fill the role the movie would have had more gravitas and stability, but Franco was just disappointing and goofy. Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, and Mila Kunis were exceedingly more powerful in their performances and character interpretations. The china doll and flying monkey were the only reprieves to scenes with Franco. The special effects were phenomenal and the audio was beautiful. Overall I had a hard time sitting through it, but the supporting cast was great. I still think Franco is a great actor-he just wasn't a good fit for Oz.

Cons slow, script was poor

My wife has always been a fan of the Wizard of Oz so we were a little hesitant to see this and expected disconnects, especially after seeing Wicked, which we enjoyed immensely but showed some obvious disconnects. Great camera work, cast, and story.. Great opportunity to introduce a new generation to a fantastic story. Highly recommended!

Interesting take on the sisters. Some scary moments, a dash of comedy and a continued hope to be more.... A better man or a more evil witch, it was a good movie.

Just a really fun movie that you could enjoy and not think too hard about. The acting could have been a bit more engaging and some more believealbe chemistry between some of the characters would have been nice.
The effects and costumes were superb

there are a few moments that may be scary for small kids, but overall very good movie. All the witches were well played, and the characters were believable.

This was such a great movie. We were quite astounded at the special effects and the story was so interesting. No one was talking during this show !! I would give it 6 stars if I could. I can't wait to see it again.
