I love English movies as I am from England. I understand the NHS system, {National Health System} and the wait mentioned in the movie to get a hip replacement and also the english food taken on the trip.
The story made you think about getting older and the choices we face when we no longer work, relationships and the need to take risks.

You cannot go wrong with the cast of this movie. Visually and audibly pleasing. Endearing and enjoyable escape for 1:58.

A beautifully shot and crafted film that explores the paradox of India (beauty juxtaposed against squalor) through the eyes of several retirees who have fallen on hard times. Fantastic acting from an ensemble cast at the top of its game, and many moments of intense humor as well as quiet contemplation. We loved this film and want to book a trip to India ourselves.

Many retired individuals have limited funds. This movie inspired the idea that there are a lot of options that need to be explored. And, getting out of one's comfort zone can be a great thing.

This was a beautiful story of living – living for some when their life is at its bleakest. Wonderfully scripted with humor this movie warms the heart as it shares a journey that hopefully enlightens one to rise to that occasion should their life dictate it.

“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” is an exotic work of art which feels like a deep and soulful picture. After all, it has all right ingredients. There are great actors, interesting characters, romantic pairings, existential angst, good humor, and mesmerizing music. But in the end “Exotic Marigold” didn’t realize the dream to deserve what Sunny (Dev Patel) might call “a most-successfully-made movie.”
A group of aging British citizens, who have set out to achieve various late-in-life goals in India, meet in the airport. They discover they are all staying at the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: “For the elderly and beautiful.”
They arrive in India to find the hotel a dusty shadow of its former self, more shadow than former self; much like the visitors themselves. But the elder travelers settle into a residence that seems like heaven to some but hell to two of the retirees. Jean Ainslie (Penelope Wilton) is beginning to doubt if she has a marriage worth keeping. She becomes a giddy schoolgirl-in-love only to be devastated when she learns the object of her desire, Graham, is gay (Tom Wilkinson.) Muriel (Maggie Smith) is put off by the food, the people, and the squalor. Both can’t stand the poverty and incessant “riot of noise and color.” With a more positive attitude, Norman takes tips from the Kama Sutra, longing for a night of excitement once more, like a young man.
Sunny is the ever-optimistic hotel manager who is still not quite out from under the control of his “mommy-gee.” He is in love with a beautiful young lady but his mother is indignant that he is not complicit with his arranged marriage. His motto is
“Everything will be alright in the end. If things are not alright, then it is not yet the end.” Hoping for a better future is entwined in our DNA, so it’s charming to see that some of the dreams the residents hope for actually come true.
Sunny speaks with a stereotyped patter of stretched truths. It seems the Indians have a tendency to make the truth fit the momentary need of the situation.
And why such chaos and squalor? “I might even become accustomed to the storm of car horns and vendors” says Evelyn (Judi Dench) in her narration. “This riot of noise and color” are kept to a minimum in order to achieve the relaxing ambience that we so greatly enjoy in a movie. However, “Exotic Marigold” lacks a larger dramatic tension that might create a character or story arc that would lift our senses up to an Indian mountaintop of inspiration.
The movie tries to mine the same ore as “Eat, Pray, Love.” It succeeds by being more consistent and full-bodied but fails by being less romantic than the 2010 hit movie.
Oh, the heavenly dream come true for Evelyn. She is hired as coach for a group of call-center employees. What an opportunity to be able to train the callers from India to speak well and give the right responses to those lucky people they call.
The movie meanders from vignette to vignette weaving together a charming pastiche of human endeavor stories and struggles. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, however, is a bit like the movie itself. It promises more than it can deliver. Is it a pleasant movie? “Yes, gentle reader, it is most definitely, most assuredly a most excellent movie.”

I am a red-hatter who was afforded the opportunity for a screening of this movie before it came out on 5/4/12. I went home ranting and raving about this movie that wasn't just all "fluff" for the 20-something age bracket.
This movie was so touching and funny; we laughed and shed a few tears.......and now.....I can't even share this movie with my mother and aunts and friends, since it isn't playing within an hour's drive from our home town. I am very dissapointed that this was only released in limited theatres and areas. FOX needs to re-evaluate its plans when releasing a movie that is good for so many age groups.
With that said....it is a great movie and I highly recommend it for anyone who lives close enough to a theatre where they can go see it.

The Brits have been fascinated with India for centuries. However, India hasn't really taken off as an alternate retirement location for them. Well, this movie brings together an unlikely group of people who are in India for some sort of economic advantage. The civil servant couple, for example, preferred to go there instead of a retirement community set up to take them through the end of their life. The hotel they go to is managed by a well-meaning young Indian man who's in love with the wrong sort of girl, at least that's what his mother says. Anyway, the drama ensues and the retirees have the time of their lives, romance and sex included. It's really very funny.

With a star line-up of actors like this, what could go wrong?The story isn't PERFECT, but it's a lovely two hours. Wonderful, colorful and realistic images of India, too. Really enjoyed it. Only complaint is that trailers always give away all the punch lines.

Savory curry for the silver set. A clutch of the best British actors, transported to Jaipur, assaulted by the sensory overload of contemporary India. Sustained by true wit, intelligent dialogue, and the exhilaration of trying your wings, we wonder if they stick with it? Sure, parts fray downward into the merely sentimental, but the main narrative rocks ahead and we leave smiling.
