If you're going to see this movie because you love Meryl Streep, then you'll get your money's worth, down to the penny. If you want to learn more about Margaret Thatcher, British Politics, or are just a history buff, you might be disappointed. The movie tells you that Thatcher was controversial, historic, and important, but doesn't really supply the "why" or the "how." However, many of the individual scenes within the choppy narrative play amazingly well, mostly thanks to Meryl.

Just when I think Meryl Streep can't impress me anymore than she already has, here comes this performance which just blew me away! If I didn't know who she was, I never would have guessed she wasn't a British actor, so seamlessly does she slip into this role. She commands, no, demands your attention from the first minute she comes on the screen. Whether she is talking to her late husband or before Parliament, or declaring war, you cannot take your eyes off of her.
I admit to not knowing much about Margaret Thatcher, even though I was in college at the time she was elected Prime Minister. Although I don't agree with most of her political views, I do admire her for her tenacity and sheer determination. The lady had guts!
It is so sad that she now suffers from dementia, because I for one, would like to have known what she would think of this portrayal of her life. Would she approve of it? Would she disapprove of it? Either way, she most certainly would have an opinion on it!
I can't recommend this movie enough! Without a doubt, Meryl Streep gives THE performance of the year in it!

Meryl Steep's performance as Margaret Thatcher is truly outstanding. The complexity of tackling this larger than life role combined with her portrayal of love, power and aging makes her the one to beat at Oscar time.
The only down side for me was light character development of the supporting cast. In other words it's almost two hours of Ms Streep in just about every frame. Fortunately for all of us she's well worth watching.

Instead of focusing on the controversial but undoubtedly significant achievements of the iron lady as she was in her heyday, that storyline is, infuriatingly, subordinated to the wanderings of the demented woman she later became, which inexplicably and annoyingly dominate the film. I felt totally cheated!

I was expecting to love Meryl Streep in this film, but I wasn't expecting to love the movie. What a wonderful surprise to find that Iron Lady is my favorite fIlm of the year. I can't remember the last time I cried in a movie theater, but Streep's portrayal of the aged Thatcher is heartbreaking and touching. If Streep doesn't win an Oscar this year, then no one should win. She's just that good.

I'll say what so many others have said about this "bio" of an amazing woman: "WOW". First of all, Meryl Streep IS Margaret Thatcher. It was uncanny, how she not only changed her accent and speech mannerisms, she totally immersed her appearance so one really had to look and think, "Is that really Meryl Streep?" I'll be a parrot here, and throw in my expectation that she will be nominated for an Academy Award.
The movie itself was wonderful. It would be impossible to turn a memoir of a living person into a 2 hour movie and not leave some things out. I think they did a great job of laying the ground work for those of us who did not know the back story: daughter of grocers, father's career and life in politics. Some things that were NOT said were captured in nuances, such as the scene where she tells her parents she's been accepted into Oxford. Her father embraces her, her mother turns her back and continues to wash dishes.
Yes, I will agree with many: there was too much time devoted to the tragedies of dementia. I walked away from the movie not liking all of her strong politics, telling my husband that if she were current today in America's politics, she'd be a Tea Party Advocate. But overall, this movie is a must-see, both from a historical and emotional viewpoint of a magnificent character.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Meryl, you did it again. This was not the movie I expected-like J Edgar Hoover movie, but much better. M.T's dementia or alzheimer's, and hallucinations of her dead husband, lead her to re-call her personal role and historical role. Very well done.

Of course the main attraction here is Meryl Streep. She is the movie, but as others have said, it's not a very good story. Given the incredible amount of material from such a rich life, the focus on her dotage seems odd, but it certainly gave Meryl and the make-up artist a chance to show us their collective talent. And it's a good reminder that most of us will probably end up "washing out a tea cup" even though we've made a contribution, but Thatcher's strength and courage should have been more of the focus. It was interesting to me that I'd never heard her maiden name before seeing this film, yet her father was so influential in her life. Also, PG-13 is a ridiculous rating....this movie is on par with the evening news, but it won't hold a child's interest - only Meryl & Jim Broadbent held mine.

Dementia is a part of life, unfortunately, and the portrayal of Margaret in that light makes her more real than bigger than life. I thought that the acting was excellent and enough to say that I enjoyed the experience, however, the movie, itself, did not feel big. There were no surprises as to who the "Iron Lady" was. She was equal to her persona. There were a few technical miffs, that make my eyes roll, such as, she golfs lefty and writes righty. However, on the whole, was I disappointed that I went (?), absolutely not,

Ms. Streep seems to transform into the person she portrays. In this case, she IS Margaret Thatcher! I wish the movie had been as strong as its star. The last third of the movie just kept getting weaker and weaker and the ending was extremely disappointing. I overheard people asking each other "is it over?"; "what happened?" So, go to see a splendid performance my one of America's best actors, but be prepared to be underwhelmed by the movie.

Despicable movie. Depiction of the Great Margaret Thatcher is disturbing and distasteful. They begin with her dementia and end with her sad dementia. Not the proper way this great leader should be remembered. While Meryl Streep's performance is mesmerising, this movie was incredibly depressing. Not enough footage of impressive accomplishments. SUCH DISRESPECT especially considering that she is still alive. Boycott this movie.

Meryl Streep again gives a flawless and believable performance, such a talented actress! My husband and I discovered we're not Margaret Thatcher fans... the prime minister who wanted to be queen... let them eat cake! They could have done more for detail and explanation of her time, but all in all a good movie.

Someone will one day do a great movie on Margaret Thatcher, but this is not it. Here she appears as merely stubborn rather than principled and deliberate. The political and economic context does not come across (and is dominated by cliches) so it is unclear what Thatcher did, why, and why it mattered. Much time is spent witnessing Thatcher's ailing days, which makes this a movie more on aging (quite well done, despite the disappearing Denis being hard to figure out initially) than on character and history. In the end, we are left without understanding either Thatcher or her times. But the movie is worth watching to enjoy the excellent acting of Meryl Streep as Margaret and Jim Broadbent as Denis.

The Iron Lady follows a recent trend in biopix with a stellar performance by its star backed up by a much more than merely adequate supporting cast in a somewhat disjointed movie than can only be followed well by a viewer steeped in the life and accomplishments of the protagonist who is able follow its flashbacks and place them in proper perspective.
I almost thought the screenwriters, director & producers got a copy of J. Edgar's scenario and substituted Maggie Thatcher wherever the former had Hoover.
Regardless of its imperfections, The Iron Lady showcases perhaps the greatest female actor of our time, Meryl Streep, in a role that will garner her numerous award nominations and probably more than one win. The Iron Lady is definitely a "must see" movie if only to relish another unforgettable performance by Meryl Streep.

The only reason to see this thin and poorly constructed 'biography' is to see Meryl's Streep rich portrayal of the controversial Margaret Thatcher. The performances are uniformly excellent, however the conceit of telling her vast story from the perspective of her waning, confused latter life outside the public eye just doesn't work. Her memories as told from this perspective create a disjointed patchwork of her life's experiences, never achieving a sense of how this woman reached such historic pinnacles. Nor do you get an insight as to her inner life and how it informed her work and relationships. The revelation of Meryl Streep is that she can take such weak material and somehow manage to create yet another layered, mesmerizing performance. She slips into the skin of Thatcher so well that you almost completely forget you are watching an actress. The reality is that you are watching a national treasure, and again, for that reason alone, this is worth seeing. On DVD at home.

I was really looking forward to a Meryle Streep entertainer and I was not disappointed. That woman is just so phenomenal. I was so engrossed I forgot to drink my water until almost the end. The daughter and husband were terrific too. One of the best movies I've seen during this holiday rush to the Oscars. I do wish there had been an ending regarding some of the history, the closing written paragraph, as I'm not very "margaret thatcher literate." Other than that, no quibbles.
