Meryl Streep was fantastic! But the way the movie was written, as a series of flashbacks by M. Thatcher was poorly done, confusing, disjointed, and very uncomplimentary to Thatcher. I'm hesitant to give it even One Star.

Like so many of the reviews already posted Meryl Strepp again gives an award winning performance, and like so many reviews I wish the movie had not been centered so much on the current condition of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. I left the movie knowing more about Thatcher but also extremely sad that my take away memory is of the life she is now living. Wish the movie had been centered far more on what Thatcher did as a young leader.

Streep is great. She again works her unique magic of capturing the look and moves and voice of a known personality. But the majority of film time is of Margaret Thatcher as an old doddering and sometimes halucinatory lady, snatching at memories of her past to review. I am no fan of Thatcher's brand of politics, but to portray her life from this negative and impaired vantage point is unfair and cowardly.

Told from the viewpoint of an aged Margaret Thatcher fighting off memory loss and hallucinations, the story of her life is told through a series of flashbacks starting with her modest beginnings living over the grocery her father ran, to her fiery years as the first female Prime Minister of the UK. A mix of fiction and fact, this film is most notable for the incredible acting by Meryl Streep. This is clearly one of her finest acting roles in years. Regardless of your feelings about the politics, the story itself is quite interesting and well directed. The director's choice to focus on her dementia with her constant hallucinations of her dead husband dominating much of the film is a unique theatrical device that at times works well. Its told in a very loving fashion focusing on the their long term bond and his unyielding affection for her. The dementia is contrasted by her many sharply lucid moments that make you wonder just how aware she still is. You get the feeling that she can be completely there when she feels she needs to be, but is teetering on that edge of losing herself. There's no doubt that all eyes will be on Streep at the Academy Awards ceremony based on her work here.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Meryl Streep did an amazing job portraying Margaret Thatcher, in my eyes at least. I do not know much about the woman, or if they storyline for the movie was historically accurate. But I did enjoy watching it. It was entertaining when I went and was the only person under age 60 (I'm 30).

Meryl Streep does an excellent job of portraying what we will all--great or not--face as we age. This is an empathetic portrait of an aging woman and the indignities that extreme age bring. It is hardly, however, a portrait of an Iron Lady. That is, the title can be seen only as ironic. In fact, somewhat mysteriously, the movie focuses primarily on Thatcher's youth and age with only brief retrospective vignettes of the events of her days in power. She was a dynamic, incredibly strong and compelling leader; critical to restoring Britain's economic health and pride during trying times. And, I'm told, male world leaders found her irresistably attractive partly because of the power she wielded so effectively.
Because of it's perspective, this movie captured virtually none of her true strength and accomplishments--her legacy to UK, women, and global politicians that remains impressive. It's a shame to waste Streep's spectacular performance on this screenplay.

Using Thatcher's dementia as a way to thread the story felt like a real cheap shot by the producers. Meryl Streep is excellent as usual, but - whether you like or loathe what Thatcher did while in power - this movie was an undignified reflection on an important British Prime Minister and could have been so much better.

Meryl Streep IS the Iron Lady, and turns in a magnificent performance. That's what earned the three stars I gave this film. The rest of the movie spent too much time on the portrayal of her as a doddering old woman speaking with her dead husband. I also felt there was too much bias against her, with all the riot scenes. They did happen, but I think too much time was allotted to them. I was in the UK during her tenure as PM, and met some hardcore unemployed who told me her actions were harsh, but very necessary.

Watching Meryl Streep in any movie that she chooses is always a treat. This time that's where the treat ended. This movie had no plot! Not a REAL biography, not a real historical piece....really...much ado about nothing. The costumes, and scenery were good(not great), and the supporting characters had to suffer with this script right along with Meryl. Oh well! This could have been saved for a snowy day at home.

The acting for Streep (Margaret Thatcher) and Jim Broadbent (Dennis Thatcher) was incredible. The actual story line and its development was confusing and disjointed and fell far short of my expectations.

If you're a die-hard Meryl Streep fan you won't be disappointed with her portrayal of Britain's longest ruling and, to date, the only female Prime Minister, Britain has ever known. The film is biographical in nature and tends to gloss over Thatcher's political achievements and her faux-pas, which is not necessarily a bad thing. It provides viewers with a snapshot of her personal life with her husband and her daughter as well as her relationships with some of her political colleagues.
The performances of the entire cast are so smooth it's difficult to tell where the acting begins and ends. This movie is probably one of Streep's best and I predict another Best Actress in a Dramatic Role Academt Award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher.

"The Iron Lady" is an intimate portait of Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep). Margaret Thatcher through a lot of hard work became the first female Prime Minister of Great Britain. She was also one of the 20th Century's most influential woman. Margaret came from humble beginnings to break down gender barriers in an otherwise male dominated world.
The best thing about "The Iron Lady" is Meryl Streep's brilliant portrayal of Margaret Thatcher. The movie is steep in flashbacks. You really have to pay attention and at times I felt a bit lost. There are many important times during Thatcher's reign as Prime Minister that are glossed over in the movie. This only leads to more questions. You never really get a clear current picture about her family.
A large section of the movie is about the Falklands War, which during that time Margaret Thatcher was the Prime Minister. All in all Meryl Streep is masterful in "The Iron Lady". If you are a Meryl Streep fan then by all means you should see "The Iron Lady".

"Acting"seems inadequate to describe what Meryl Streep does in this movie.
It is almost a supernatural transformation into another person.
One behind the scenes artist that really should be rewarded for their superior work on this film is the make-up artist.

I enjoyed this movie thoroughly because Meryl Streep is golden in pretty much everything she does. The historical aspects were very interesting and all of the acting was fantastic. I only wish they would have done a little less back and forth with the flashback sequences. I prefer the single time flashback where they start in the present and then flashback to the progrssion of her life finishing in the present but other than that it was great!

I was so looking forward to this movie and it didn't disappoint. Meryl Streep IS Margaret Thatcher. Very well done all the way around. My wife and I loved this movie. All of the cast were great in their performances. I think Meryl was a great choice for the role of Iron Lady. This movie was not for everyone, but it was amazing in so many ways. We went to learn how she became prime minister and our question was answered. They didn't dwell at any particular historical part of her adult life which this movie covered. The movie is quiet - I could here my neighbor chew ice. When it was over the audience acted spellbounded and didn't move. I was not disappointed and Meryl Streep performance was like she channeled her. This dealt with parts of our lives that people are uncomfortable with why I don't recommend it.

.... who once again gives us an utterly amazing performance .... this time as Margaret Thatcher! The first 15 minutes of this film are some of the best opening 15 minutes of any movie made in the last few years .... simply on the strength of Meryl Streep's performance as a current day older Thatcher. You get a firm glimpse into Prime Minister Thatcher's personality, current life and younger life. It is subtle and so well-told. This movie is not perfect. It is not the greatest biographical movie ever made .... but it is "bloody good". What drives the film to be a must see for most adults is Streep's performance and physical transformation into "The Iron Lady". It is an astonishing combination of actress, complex and perfect makeup, script & dialogue and camera angles. The film is only lacking in showing us even more about her private life and inner governmental life...and I would have liked that. Overall "The Iron Lady" earns a rhino horn carved in granite up! My mug of stout is raised in celebration.

Terribly disappointed. I came away knowing no more about Margaret Thatcher than I did during the 70's (IRA bombings, crippling unemployment, etc)
Meryl Streep gives an Oscar worthy performance, but to center it around her Alzheimer's disease, with little or no emotional chord, not to mention the absence of a tangible story, we came away unchanged by a woman who was a trailblazer for women politicians.
Someone could have done better by Ms. Streep.
