This movie barely had any plot. I was bored to tears and wanted to leave-I stayed because I kept on thinking to myself that "It has to get better?" I can not believe all of the great actors that are in this? It was boring, not funny at all and the acting was bad. Just a stupid premise for a movie. I can't believe ANYONE would give this a positive review. I wanted my money back and so did my husband!

This was completely delightful to watch, and everybody in the theater laughed a lot. There was also a kitten that constantly evoked "awwww"s. I hope on the DVD one of the special features is Bob Balaban talking about weather for at least three hours.

Some would say (particularly his detractors) that this is a regression for the filmmaker. But I would say that it is a smaller movie but with loftier expectations, still in the style of Wes Anderson that his fans love (and many indie filmmakers - and commercials - have tried to ape).
The period setting actually works in Anderson's favor in this instance, since most of his films (if not all) always have that air of being from the recent past (i.e. Anderson's youth).
The scenes with the kids and the Khaki Scouts in particular are the best. I would show this as a double feature with SON OF RAMBOW to a group of young teens and have their minds blown (either of those two would be THE GOONIES to their young generation, in a perfect world).
It's almost as if this was the movie that Max Fischer wanted to make, once he graduated from Rushmore and then film school.

The movie MOONRISE KINGDOM is one I am sure most of you have never heard of, well consider that a travesty, this movie is AWESOME. Set in 1965 on an island 2 kids (each 12) decide they hate their lives and plan to run away together (on an island) they don't get far but what they encounter together on the way is just fun to watch. No sex, No violence, 1 swear word, it's just a joy, and my opinion is any kid 12 and over will enjoy it and understand it as well. ***** stars

If you enjoyed "Rushmore" and "The Royal Tenenbaums" you will be very at home here watching this precious gem of a quirky tale of young love. Taking place in the mid 60's in a strongly stylized age of innocence at a summer camp on a tiny northeastern island about to be hit by a hurricane, an all star cast are clearly having a great time both acting and being part of the strong visuals in this one of a kind film. The two young actors in the leading roles are wonderful. Its smart. Its tight. Its fun. Its tender. And its well written and directed. Part fairy tale, part comedy, and all Wes Anderson, this one is a keeper! Loved it!!!

I loved this movie. While it was definitely fanciful, t took me back to my own childhood circa 1965 -- that is, the record player, clothes (e.g. Bill Murray's madras pants), etc. But it's definitely not just for those in my babyboomer age group. I also loved the setting -- summer in New England.

If you are a true movie fan and appreciate actors demonstrating their real talents bring stretched AND appreciate quirkiness, you will love this movie. But those who are unable to suspend their sense of reality or do not appreciate cleverness may be disappointed.

If, like me, you don't "get" Wes Anderson movies...skip this one. It seems to be a treatise on young love and coming of age. But this theme has been tackled so often and so much better, that I don't understand why this was written, financed, and released. Many talented actors chose to take part. Maybe they all read something into this script that I believe wasn't there. For me, the good reviews and some audience response seemed to be the Emperor's New Clothes effect. I would have left the theater after 30 minutes...but I stayed. The young girl is a very good actor. The boy wasn't.
The film runs the gamut from silly to ridiculous. The writing and performances are stilled and over the top. I give this a big WHO CARES!

This is a quirky story about a boy and a troubled girl who fall in love in a very mature and unreasonable fashion. They meet up, run away, and live out an adult romance until they're caught by a band of scouts, a cop, and the girls two lawyer parents. This movie is based in the 60s, but you wouldn't know that if it weren't for the cop car from that period that keeps showing up. This movie is bold and creative in a way that we don't normally see in movies. It's well worth seeing, even if the initial look of the movie in the trailers didn't appeal to you. I, for one, was at the edge of my seat and chuckling with true amazement throughout.
