I really wanted to like this movie. I wanted to be artsy and forward thinking. Unfortunately, I could not keep my eyes open during the second half of this movie. The first 40 minutes were fun and interesting. The last hour was a snooze fest.
There was a reason that people stopped going to silent movies in the 1930's. There was a reason that talkies took over. Talkies are much more interesting. Give me dialogue!
Berenice Bejo was beautiful and captivating, but she was not enough to carry this movie.
Good but not great. I guess that I am not artsy enough to appreciate this "gem."

While I appreciated the originality of the concept, I was disappointed with the execution. A silent movie has to keep the story simple but this was so predictable that it was hard to remain interested, especially with the (overdone) effort to present a 20s era film quality resulting in a washed out image throughout. I kept hoping for more visual contrast. Acting OK, some clever background references (and nothing offensive) but not up to the hype.

My fiance and I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It was wonderfully executed from start to finish. The story was simple but superbly told. This film is a testament to good storytelling. You don't need a lot of dialogue to tell an engaging and moving story. I would recommend this film to anyone who appreciates good storytelling.

This movie was a delight, from start to finish. It was just as engaging as any contemporary comedy or drama, but also evoked the feel of the classics. Jean Dujardin was great -- as was Uggie.

If you are a movie buff you will love this love letter to the movies from writer-director Michel Hazanavicius.
I adored every minute of it as it took me out of the present and reminded me why I became a fan of movies in the first place.
The performances by the lead actors made me fall in love with Jean Dujardin's charm and his crooked smile and Berenice Bejo's expressive eyes as they lit up the screen in this silent homage to all the movies we grew up loving.
This is a black and white, silent movie but if you are like me, you will leave the theater with a warm, fuzzy feeling and an appreciation for how much can be said with expressive faces and without speaking a word.
Supporting performances by Uggie the dog, John Goodman as the studio boss and James Cromwel as the faithful driver are wonderful too!
Take your good humor to this movie and prepare to be enchanted.

More than just a silent move, "The Artist" captures all that is and was special about film, acting, and the back stories that make it all magic, better than any other film I've seen in many years. Its story of a dashing star of the silent film era making a chance meeting with a gangly but equally charming young ingenue has been often told but rarely as well as this, especially since this is essentially a silent film. The actors are amazing (even Valentin's little Asta like dog who steals so many scenes). There is both beauty and art is every frame of film here. Its a loving homage to cinema told by a master and it takes you by surprise not by its intellect but by its purity and heart. This film is a must see and a very strong Oscar contender!

The Artist is one of the more original films that I have seen in years. Though it is silent, it is not difficult to watch and is very entertaining. If you love old movies, you will appreciate this film, since it references many classic films, but even if you are not a film history buff, it is well worth seeing. It is one of the few films that I would be willing to see more than once. My teenage son enjoyed it as much as I did.

I agree with the accolades that this film is receiving. I hear all the Oscar buzz about possible 'Best Picture' category. I'm not sure whether people are just caught up in the novelty of it rather than the substance. Certainly it is feel-good and portrays the ramifications of a technological change that occurred in movie making, but is it as compelling as some of the other great movies put out this year? I will try and pose this question without spoiling the ending for those who haven't seen the film. Was it only that George was stubborn and unwilling to adjust with the times? Or did his failure have to do with a very real reason why he and the studio thought (mistakenly) that he was "only a silent movie actor?" Anyway, the bottom line is that you should definitely see this film.

As movies let technology rule the day more and more, it was refreshing to see a film that showcases the actors. Films like Avatar lend credibility to the very real fact that it is entirely possible to make a movie entirely with CGI - a movie with only motion capture and voice work behind the scenes. The Artist puts the actors entirely up front and captures a range of emotions you would be hard-pressed to match with any computer generated character. It was also fun to see the numerous character actors that played supporting roles, some only for single scenes.
It is not appealing to everyone as it is almost exclusively silent save the musical score. Indeed, unwrap your Twizzlers before it starts as there is almost ZERO opportunity to make any noises of your own. Interestingly enough, an older (60's or so) couple walked out of our showing of The Artist about ten minutes into it. Seems even those that might fully appreciate it oftentimes don't. Meanwhile a gaggle of old (70+) ladies chatted through a recent showing of Drive when we were there - go figure.
I have yet to see the perfect movie in my lifetime so no five stars here, but it most definitely earns a solid four plus.

Expectations high from others' reviews but wasn't lifted to their praises. The blend of technique (which was extra- ordinary) and the fidelity to the art form of silent films was nothing short of genius. My small disappointment relates to how it ends and the obliterated voice of George Valentine. Can't say more without being too explicit. Definitely worth seeing.

The idea (silent movie star done in by talkies) has been done to death- but this film puts a fresh spin on it. Everything works perfectly together: direction, cinematography, performances, score, editing. The screenplay is actually about something- a refreshing contrast to the usual blockbuster. It's funny and touching in equal measure- don't miss it!

From the cinematography to the score, the actors, the dancing, and the beautiful direction, this movie was an absolute joy and definitely my favorite of the year so far. It became, in my boyfriend's words, "an instant classic" even while watching it. Kudos to the bravery of the director and the producers for backing such an interesting and ultimately very successful film.
