By far the most unique movie experience I've ever had the pleasure to experience. It takes you back to the old days of Hollywood and definately creates a sense of being there. No special effects, no car chases, no nonsense. This film is refreshing, it shows that there still is real acting. Aside from the throwback to the 1920s silent era, lies a particularly heartwarming story. You can't help but sympathize with George Valentin, played to perfection by Jean Durjardin. Probably not the cup of tea for all audiences. If you enjoy "popcorn" movies then chances are this isn't for you. But if you appreciate superior acting, excellent directing and a fun engaging movie experience, you'll appreciate this one. The Artist is well worth the trip in the time machine.

Remember when things were special? No. Probably not. There was a time, not so long ago, that music and movies weren't at the push of a button. At the turn of the LAST century, a record player was around 300 dollars, and each record was 5. In 1910, that was a huge sum of money. My point is that people have forgotten the beautiful simplicity of going out to see a movie, listen to music, enjoy art. This movie isn't just a throwback to silent films. It's a subtle reminder of a time when things were special... and it's not for everyone. I think it's almost a bit elitist. If you don't appreciate movies, and the way they're made, it might not be for you. It's classified as a romance, and while there's some of that in it, it's really a character study in romanticized humanity. Don't look into the plot before you see it. It's thin, and has been told and retold since time.. and that doesn't matter. Find a local, old theatre. One that might be in need of some renovation, or has recently undergone one, and have a seat. What you'll spend the next 100 minutes doing is remembering what it's like to enjoy being human. You'll smile, you'll laugh.. you may even get a surprise or two, and when you walk back out, you'll be in a better mood than you were in when you walked in.

Really wonderful story, film, acting. The black and white was extroardinarily beautiful...didn't need it to be in color. At the end, I was ready to see a whole other movie with them singing and dancing. I was singing and humming when I left the theater.

After hearing nothing but glowing reviews, finally saw this movie. It was really interesting and really nice to see a black and white movie again. I thought it was a bit too long and very predictable. If it had been shorter I may have given it 5 stars, but I still think you should see it because it is worthwhile. See it on the big screen.

I rated this five stars for the creative retro format - it was refreshing not to have one super stunt and special effect after another. It was just a good story. I do agree with others that you can wait for the DVD or Pay Per View unless you have a retro movie house in your area. It reminds me of enjoying the Doris Day and Rock movies as a kid. Enjoy the movie, tap your feet, and keep on dancing.

I loved every moment of this movie. IT was truly a movie-going experience that I've never had before. It was strange at first, but then I was swept away by it and it seemed the most natural thing ever. It didn't employ any tricks or the typical pay-offs that make us feel like we've gotten our money's worth at the theater--no violence, no sex, no swearing. And it was visually stunning to boot.
I definitely recommend this movie to everyone who loves movies, originality, and artistry.

This is a beautiful movie; an homage to times past. The acting, the dancing were superb. Uggy, the dog, was especially appealing, in fact, he was the best part of the movie. Now, the detraction of a silent movie: the man across the aisle who munched on his popcorn and rattled the paper bag throughout the movie. So you see, there IS a good reason for dialogue and music and noise. Sarcasm aside, this movie held my interest MOST of the time. It dragged at times, and there were moments I sincerely wished it would end. But at the actual end, the movie had heart. It had love. It showed us what cinema was, once upon a time. No, I wouldn't want to go back there, but I did enjoy my brief interlude of silence. Now, back to the talkies!

The Artist is an excellent attempt to draw on nostalgia and early cinema's beauty, but at its core, the film gives us characters as thin as the dialogue. Valentin is far from sympathetic in his fallen journey, and his inability to move into talking pictures is nothing more than trite. Apparently, critics and fans are more interested in style and departure from the typical and want to proclaim themselves postmodern by languishing in the ruins of the past. Wait till DVD or HBO.

In my humble opinion, I thought that this was a good movie at its best. Different of course because now a days, just about, no one sees silent movies. I had never experienced a silent movie before. The acting told the entire story. You didn't need to know all the words that would have been spoken. It was nice to have a movie that didn't blast you out of your seats with intense volume. This is a great movie and I have recommended it to everyone. We had read all the hype, scanned all the reviews and were ready for our black & white silent experience! This film is amazing. Far exceeded our expectations. Just as the film was beginning to drag towards the end, the finale came. Wow! Everything about this film is great from the fantastic music to the great acting of the entire cast to the Jack Russell dog who almost stole the show! A must see! I couldn't stop smiling when it was all over! I'm going back to watch the film again!

Despite the great word of mouth and good press, I’m still stunned at how much I enjoyed this effort. I never thought in a million years that a silent movie made in the modern era would make my best of the year list but it did and it’s right at the top. The movie exudes charm as it develops and then grabs the viewer with its story and symbolism. It turns far darker then I expected and maybe runs a bit long but that doesn’t diminish my overall fondness for this picture. Yeah, that’s right, this is one swell picture with a cast of good eggs! The casting director should take a bow because everyone was so perfect in their vintage roles and mannerisms. Everything fits and everything works and I really can’t wait to see this one again.

The Artist was one of the most incredibly clever films I have seen in a long time. Though thought to be solely a "silent" film, the silence speaks volumes. The acting by not only the talented Jean Dujardin but the entire ensemble makes this film a gem. Truly this experience gives everything one wants in a film and leaves the viewer satisfied with a happy ending. How refreshing to see a film that does not rely on special effects, but allows the story to be the focus.

My wife coerced me into going to see a SILENT MOVIE! I cannot thank her enough. The adjectives to describe this cinema are inadequate. The acting is superb. The story line is historical. The directing and producing are amazing.The music is fantastic.
I now understand WHY this movie has been nominated and won so many awards. My pick to take the Academy Awards BEST!!

I was pleasantly surprised by the change of pace this movie provided. It was a must watch in my endeavor to see all the Academy Award Nominees and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. At times it seemed a little slow but overall I thought the acting was tremendous and overall the film was refreshing and well deserving of its critical acclaim. The score is tremendous and absolutely enhances the film (and I just purchased it)!

Touching story with poignancy. A few laughs. Gorgeous sets, scenery, costumes and music. Everything about this film is SUPERB! Even the dog should be nominated for an Academy Award!

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. While I don't expect directors to return to a silent format, these filmmakers knew how to do it and make the experience enchanting throughout, and it wasn't just a random choice. As the story chronicles the death of the silent film, you viscerally knew exactly what was being lost - it wasn't just George's career that was drying up, but an entire art form - one the audience was now intimately familiar with. The touches of sound, while rare, we're expertly placed. I know who I'm voting for on Oscar night.
