Although we knew the Artist had won a number of awards, and had heard it was mostly a silent film, it was a surprise how successfully the producers/directors/actors carried that off.
The movie could have been a sentimentalistic slobber, but was smart, quick moving and engaging. The acting by Jean Dejardin and Berenice Bejo was a treat. And their dancing was about as good as it gets. The last surprise of the film was that when Dejardin spoke - he spoke in a French accent. The movie is so well adapted to a Hollywood time/space that I simply forgot that it was a French made film.
Pros well paced, great actors

This academy award winner for best film is so atypical. It's the first foreign film to be chosen as a best film. It's black and white, and silent. But The Artist is more than a tribute to silent films; it tells the story of passing tastes and fashions - and how they can, with love, have more enduring values.
It would have been so easy for The Artist to devolve into a stylistic exercise. To its credit, it's also quite witty and enjoyable - unlike Hugo, which was released at about the same time. Hugo expresses its affection for vintage film with a leaden narrative, almost as if you have to like them; The Artist is lovable like a familiar film.

I enjoyed this movie. I loved the fact that there was no swearing or nudity-actually,it was a silent movie. It was a good movie for a 1st date. The old time theme was also great. I felt like I was living in the past with old fashioned morals.

With all of the emphasis on action and 3D movies these days, this movie is a nice break from the norm. It is shot in black and white, which I am not sure I even noticed until the end. Very little dialog. The crowd seemed to be VERY drawn in to the story, maybe more-so because of the silent movie feel for some reason. Where other movies are of excess and are overdone, this movie swiftly executes and there is little, if any, wasted commotion. Fantastic and well done. I wish more movies could be more original like this one. See it if you can.

Who would've thought a silent (mostly) movie would be this good in the 21st century? Almost 100 years since the dawn of the talkies comes this silent gem, a highly entertaining and well cast film, in black and white. I don't know how it would play at home on blu-ray, but in a crowded theatre, when everyone's reaction could be shared with each other, it was priceless. The Artist deserves every award it received, and kudos again to the Weinstein company for identifying quality entertainment.
