As long as you accept this film from the first scene as a spoof and a satire, it works very well. The music is great. Tom Cruise and Russell Brand have a lot of fun with their characetrs, and Alec Baldwin steals the show.

I saw this for the first time in it's last week off Broadway which made me very hesitant to see this movie, as it was the best time I'd ever had at a musical and I didn't want to taint that with a comparison.
I have to say, the first thirty minutes made me very nervous. I was having a hard time enduring the less than average performances of the two leads. But after Catherine Zeta Jones and Tom Cruise made their first screen appearances, it rectified the situation and had me. They absolutely stole the show and helped make this movie what it was.
If you're looking for a good time and a fun movie, go see it. The tone of this movie is campy and fun and if you know that going in, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Great surprise cameos and appearances, and light hearted. It often mocks itself throughout the movie which is funny - and smart- too. It's a pretty good time with greats songs and I don't think you'll ever love Tom Cruise more.

This is definitely not the best movie I have gone too but certainly not the worst. It was dumb and good at the same time. I thought there were some raunchy parts that I didn't find reasoning for and certainly do not believe they added to the movie. The hair and clothes weren't real depicting of the 1987 style as I remember it.
While I think Catherine Zeta-Jones is a great actress, I did not like her in this role. It is one of the few roles I think fit Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin. Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Paul Giamatti, Tom Cruise and Malin Akerman were good both artistically as well as musically.
The music was the phenomenal along with the vocal talent of all the actors. I would go again just to hear the music.

Rock of Ages is a MUST for any 80's rock music lover! The sound track is amazing. Tom Cruise actually pulled it off and did a really good job. It is a movie that was meant to be fun. The humor was funny...it was a great feel good, audience participation movie. Warning: You must be a fan of the 1980's rock and have a sense of fun and humor to enjoy. No old fuddy duddies or serious beatnicks will appreciated it!!!!

Loved the music and the performances of the "name" actors. They had to have a blast making this movie, and I enjoyed seeing Brand, Baldwin, Zeta-Jones, and Cruise in unconventional roles (OK, not so much Brand). Hough and Boneta were probably the weakest links for me, mostly because of the weak storyline. But who came for the story? It was the music that was the draw. Cruise rocked and looked good doing it. Hard to believe he's pushing 50. I rocked and almost rolled in laughter at some of the scenes. This was just a good time, and yes, I'd recommend it for those who love rock 'n roll!

I loved Rock of Ages, I laughed all the way through it, Cruise was great as the burned out rock star, and did an incredible job with the music. The "sex" scene with Cruise and the Rolling Stone writer was so funny! It's a musical, adapted from a Broadway play, and I just thought it was hilarious. Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand were very funny together, Paul Giamatti was appropriately slimey as the agent, and the 2 young leads were very talented singers. I'm surprised at the bad critical reviews this movie has received, everyone in my audience seemed to love it. Lots of laughing, even applause at a couple of points in the movie. If you hate musicals, you obviously won't like it, but I loved it.

I felt it was a fun and entertaining movie but it won't be in my top 10. The soundtrack was awesome! I wouldn't recommend bringing kids to this movie since there are a couple sexual innuendo's not appropriate for kids. Acting was average even with the great cast. The movie had a musical feel to it but with rock n roll music. My grade would be a B-.

Succinct Points:
1) This isn't true Broadway; it's a Broadway production for the "B&T" crowd.
2) This movie/concept probably can't fly outside of a liberal city. The chuckling over the gay relationship scene (in Revere, MA) was not only obnoxious, it was reminiscent of Archie Bunker.

This film seems to capture the essence of the successful Broadway show (originally workshopped around Manhattan until it hit perfection), but falls short if attempting to bring the Broadway stage to the Silver Screen.
While capturing the essence of the show, it can in no way replicate the Broadway experience--despite theatres offering "Directors Seating" and Dolby Digital systems with impressive sound. There's no Playbill; there's no excitement (and a smidgen of anxiety) that the actors are performing for us live and anything can happen. It's simply a movie made with many retakes, a lot of digital editing (e.g. Tom Cruise's voice clearly has some auto-tune in there), a lot of digital editing (no wrinkle-lines on these guys!) and singing in Broadway-esque style.
And unlike a Broadway show, where most audience members dissect the set design, the feel of the theatre, staging, and performance, most attendees of this movie are just looking to spend eight dollars to hear renditions of their favorite pop-rock songs performed by attractive young performers (Alec Baldwin notwithstanding).
Of course, the songs and arrangements are impressive. The character development is just as strong as the show. But let's face it--something falls short here. In a movie, people don't just break into song. The level of acting required for the stage is not captured here on the small-screen, no matter what the efforts of the directors.
Middle-America, here's my advice: .If you think this is Broadway, then the Big Apple arts scene probably isn't for you. If you want fun, mindless entertainment vaguely resembling a show, spend your eight dollars. We'll spend our $80, but truly experience what "Rock of Ages" is all about.

I wanted to love this movie, I really did. I for sure was not let down by the casting of Tom Cruise,Alec Baldwin, and Paul Giamatti, who are all great in their roles. But you can't get over the feeling that the filmakers blew a great chance to make a cult classic. What starts out very promising falls flat about two thirds through the film. After that its as if they ran into production problems or the editors were forced to rush the project to meet a deadline. The last 30 minutes is really tough to sit through. The film is way too long and over the top. But on the plus side is the fun 80's music and Tom Cruise as an aging over the hill heavy drinking rock star. Nice try.

This movie BLEW ME AWAY. I didn't know what to expect going in (didn't see any trailers or read any reviews about it before hand). I have to say the movie was done in an unexpected way and I was wicked surprised how well the movie was. The music was great (remembering the 80's) and rock n roll was the best! Again, I did not even know that Tom Cruise was going to be in the movie until I read his name in the credits in the beginning. Also, Alec Baldwin. They both were awesome. Even Catherine Zeta-Jones! BUT Tom Cruise was unexpectedly HOT HOT HOT in this movie and was GREAT in his part. I will be buying the soundtrack and the Blu-Ray when it is available. Maybe I am a bit biased because I grew up with the 80's rock n roll, but, even so I wouldn't have written this review for just any movie.

Awesome! I could see this movie again and again!! It is 100% Rock N Roll. Terrific music!! I had to use self-restraint to not stand up in the theater and start dancing!! All the stars could sing. Smashing, colorful, witty adaptation of the current Broadway musical-comedy blockbuster benefits mightily from ingenious star casting, a soundtrack awash in late '80s hits, and a savvy comic send-up of the period's L.A. music scene. There's no denying the party-time pow of Rock of Ages, or of Tom Cruise's performance. A must see for a good time.
