This is another movie helping the common American citizen understand the situation. When 75 years ago in another country a group of people was declared illegal, most common folks didn't know what really was going on. We don't either. Well, once you see this movie, you get an idea... I don't usually write reviews, but this movie really struck a chord. It was well-acted, subtle and had many layers. It was a gripping story, and was very provocative too. . .I found myself asking questions about the different characters the next day. Anyway, I'd highly recommend it.

...of the challenges, tension and motivations that inhabit the lives of illegal Mexican aliens trying to live an honest life in spit of their illegal status. Director Weitz generates a lot of empathy by focusing in on a fictional illegal immigrant, his relationship with his teenage son and the immediate world they occupy. This is an unromantic, gritty, unretouched look at what their lives might well be like. I will admit to being strongly anti illegal immigrant and this movie has had an impact on me - softening my views. Kudos to the wonderful cast, the writer and director, the cinematographer and editor. The one thing that I found missing that would have increased the impact,for me personally, would have been a deeper, more present musical score. This film seems to "scream" for music in some places where there was none. No doubt that this was a conscious decision by the director (silence can speak volumes and make us think, make us squirm a bit and, sometimes, make us downright uncomfortable - intentionally) BUT I would have liked more background music. Overall - very nice piece of work that I can easily recommend to all adult film-goers with an eclectic cinematic palette. A legal rhino horn up.

This was a beautifully cast, and executed film. The story was simple, but touching and left me with greater empathy for the hard working "illegals" among us. It deserves to be seen, and thankfully, no #3D glasses are required.

This movie truly shines as a story about how love and the teaching of good values can overcome all obstacles. The setting is the illegal community of Los Angeles and how they live, working hard and trying to improve the lives of those they love. The main characters are a father and son. The father works as a gardener. The son goes to a gang-infested school and is having a relationship with a gangster's sister. As if that were difficult enough to deal with, his best friend is anxious to become a gang member. But, amid all this pressure, he always has his father to remind him of what's right and wrong. The tension is thick between them, especially when his father reveals his idealistic, and downright honest, nature.
This subject-matter has been done often and I was reluctant to spend more time on it going into this film. However, I must admit that I was awestruck from beginning to end. This is a well-crafted movie with terrific tension, solid action, and suspense. I was impressed with the director's sensitivity to the subject and his ability to craft a balanced look at the controversial topic of illegal immigration. This movie is highly entertaining and educational, not to mention motivational and inspiring.
