No question, Hunger Games has credible performances and a challenging concept - but it's also overlong and not very credible - even from the standards of speculative fiction.

I have no problem with the plot pitting one teen against another; it's been done often, on all sorts of levels, throughout books and film. But Hunger Games is no Lord of the Flies. Some apocalyptic films seem dated after a few years - and a few are embarrassing even now (e.g.,John Carter). Hunger Games falls in the latter category too easily. The near future with dyed poodle hair-cuts comes too close to self-parody.

Jennifer Lawrence is natural and appealing in the lead, and Woody Harrelson offers another strong, diverse role. But compared to the film version of Lord of the Flies - or even Battle Royale - The Hunger Games comes across as half-baked. Unless, of course, you're a fan of Suzanne Collins' books.

Fun to watch, but nothing spectacular

Enjoyable movie, but for being 2 1/2 hours long, it isn't very deep. You really only follow the story of one Tribute. You don't learn a lot about her life, or the life of people in her community or the dystopia that is North America. Sadly, you can probably guess the plot for the entire movie before you see it. As for being shallow, most of the other tributes die off without you even seeing them, so it has no impact on you when they all start dying. I thought (and was hoping) the story would fall more in line with 1984, where they do something crazy to overthrow the Games, the system or the oppressive government, but no, they just go along with what they're expected to do, and the movie ends lackluster-ly. All that said, the build-up to the Games was intense, and the movie was good enough to watch.

A Game Not For Kids

Now, before I cast my review for all to see I will say that, in any movie, the book, is usually always better. In this case, I'm hoping to people who have read the book (I haven't) it is. The concept for this film was interesting and the idea behind it I found to be promising. Actors played there part better then others and the action, props, and effects were over all good. But I don't know if Tom Stern (cinematographer) decided to do this in his sleep or what, but the shots in this film did not live up to his previous work to say the least; And WHOEVER was the main camera operator for this film needs a lesson or two about steady cam. If it was supposed to be an effect for the movie or if it was edited in this way, whatever the case, it was done badly. Every other shot seem to be a close-up and instead of going into a next shot, the operator just awkwardly panned the camera upwards or downwards like he was rushing to be done with it. Now, the only other objection I have is the violence of it, there are scenes where kids brutally murder other kids. Where I have a problem with this is that this movie is rated PG-13, I don't know why it was decided on that but from what I saw this should have been rated R from the graphic killings of children. There was a good message behind it and for any film, of course, lots of hard work goes into any piece. For the men and women who worked on this project, the 3 stars are for you. For the actual film I would give it 1. I'd wait for this to come out on DVD/Blu-Ray before putting down 10 bucks. But this is just my opinion, go out and decide for yourself.

Very Good Movie

I thought the movie was very good. I have not read any of the books, so I didn't have very high expectations for the movie. The movie is 2hr 22min, but it didn't feel like it was that long at all. I would definitely recommend this movie to my friends.

Opinion, from Book to Movie

Having read the triology before seeing the movie, I was excited and thrilled to go watch it with my fellow friends who have also read the books. When I heard that the series was going to be turned into a movie I was estatic. Then the magazines started to come up, pictures of the cast and scenes from the movies, I thought, "hey, not to shabby." Of course, as with many book to movie situation, I was a tiny bit skeptic when going into see the movie; however I do not love the story less. Being able to capture as much from the book as it is within the already 2 hours film, I'd say it was fine. I would've liked to see more of the crumpled district though, and hoped that the reaping was more exciting and less shaky. Despite this, all else was the rest was greatly portrayed with the talent and skills of the cast and crew. Yes, there is violence in the film, but compared to the average violence that is already seen on regular television, this was decent. And my two cents: Hunger Games was worth my time and I look foward to seeing the next ones!

This movie to me was just ok. I think the story could have been told in less time. It was a bit confusing and dragged out. It was definitely imaginative but I found it a bit disturbing to watch children killing children. Certainly there are better ways to get across any of the themes throughout the movie. I would definitely not recommend this for children.

Possibly the best book to movie adaptation I've ever seen. Collins herself helped to write the screenplay, which I'm sure makes a huge difference. It was cast perfectly. They added some extra stuff that wasn't in the books, but it only added to what was going on in this books and those to come. It was pretty perfect.

This movie did an excellent book justice. As always when a book is made into a movie some things will have to be changed for time's sake. In this case the changes were thoughtful and did not detract from the plot. It should be easy to follow for anyone. An all around great movie, I would recommend it to anyone, regardless of weather or not you have read the book.

I have been getting asked by alot of people if I liked the movie. Yes I did. However, there where alot of things that did not appear in the movie as I had hoped. I think that I had very high expectations for the movie since it was all they hype. I throughly enjoyed the books. I understood every moment of Katniss and Peeta. But I think that if you didn't read the book beforehand...then you wouldn't understand the characters and the way they behaved. The book built and expressed a very detailed persona to each character. Peeta I believe could have been better...with how his love is expressed in the book did not go into the movie. Overall I think that the movie was better for the second time around. I had to watch it twice...lol..with my friends and then with my daughters.

I never got much into this book series until about a few months ago when my sister's fiancé shared more about it with me. As time went on I got more and more aware about how huge this film was actually becoming. I then bought the first book and immediately hooked into its incredible storyline. Once I finish the book, I went to the midnight opening of the film with my friend. From books I've read, and film adaptations since I've seen, The Hunger Games was by far one of the most loyal adaptations of a book I've ever seen so far. Director Gary Ross really captured the tone of the book and he knew exactly what the fan base readers were waiting for. It is one thing to be "focused and into" a movie, but it is another thing to be mesmerized by one. And that is just what I was with this film. from the brilliant casting, to the notes of the soundtrack,

The Hunger Games is about a post-apocalyptic North America that's divided into 12 districts and then the Capitol (government). The back story is that 74 years earlier, 13 districts rebelled against the Capitol in a war, but failed and lost District 13. As "payback," each district must give up two randomly drawn individuals: one male, one female, and must fight to the death in a massive televised event that they call the hunger games.

Jennifer Lawrence does a phenomenal portrayal as Katniss Everdeen, right down to the T. As were the other actors. It was actually Lawrence's performance that brought me back to watch it a second time. And the film was just as amazing as it was the first time. Words cannot describe the incredible work behind the film. You must witness it for yourself!

The movie was honestly fantastic! One of the best movies I think that has come from a movie in awhile. Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence make a fantastic Peeta and Katniss!! I thought that the move followed the book very well with only small changes. Loved it and will be more than ready to see it again when it comes out on DVD!!

The Hunger Games!

This was definitely a better book, but books are always better! When you read this trilogy you become so attached to the characters and their story and when you watch the movie it is a bit of a let down. I enjoyed watching the movie with my (almost 12y/o) son but you can't help to feel that there is a few key points left out. The characters were well chosen unlike Twilight. The acting was good but the camera footage way bad! I literally felt sick watching some of the running scenes! Don't sit too close! Overall the movie was good but book was AWESOME!!

Not what I expected

Having read the books I was expecting a little bit of a different film. Alot of the plot remained the same, but what I believe to be important moments were absent. I love the books and because of that the film was just lacking to me. I would say if you want to see the movie keep the book out of mind. The filming style also bugged me. The camera shaking and crazy angles in some shots made me a little sick. I know they wanted it to seem raw and like the viewer was seeing it through Katniss' eyes but it made it very comical in a way and nauseating. Similar to the blairwitch project. The actors are the saving grace of this piece Jennifer, Josh, Elizabeth, Lenny, Donald, Liam, and Woody kept the show rolling and made it intriquing. If you want to see a good blockbuster movie then yes go but if you want to see a good book adaptation film this is sub-par.

First let me say that I absolutely loved the Hunger Games books. I couldn't wait to see the movie. The books are thought provoking, gripping and gut wrenching. The movie just didn't capture it for me. The "shaky cam" made me feel disconnected. I wanted to see the guttural emotion on the faces of District 12 when Katniss takes the stage. The camera merely captured anything but a blur of the most important part of the book. The same with the scenes during the games. It is about survival, fear, danger and death. I couldn't even focus on what was happening during those scenes, let alone feel a connection to the character's feelings. I understand that movies can only give you a portion of what you get in the books. But, I didn't think this came close.

A fantastic portrayal of 'Suzanne Collins' futuristic novel that centers on the sixteen year old 'Katniss Everdeen'. The movie stays on target with the book, for the mostpart. An all-star cast, with Lenny Kravitz playing the part of Cinna, which was a pleasant surprise. The suspense and action kept us on the edge of our seat! My teens and I loved it! The audience applauded at the end of the movie. Definitely the must see movie of the year! If you are a fan of the book, and miss seeing 'Hunger Games' on the big screen, you'll regret it.

This movie was generally good. One of the better screenplays I have seen. Some flaws though... they completly cut out Madge's character and made up how Katniss got the pin. Also, a lot of the scenes in the Games were not draged out as long as they should have been, for my taste. Although the movie was 2 and a half hours long already, so there isnt much they could have added before people start getting bored. Overall great movie... Saw it twice!!

I loved the movie! There are some differences between the movie and the book, BUT the movie is very close to what happens in the book. It was very exciting and kept you watching. My friend has not read the book and went to the movie. He had no problem understanding what was going on. Can't wait for it to come out on DVD so I can watch it all the time! You will not regret going to see this movie! I LOVED IT! =)

The movie was much better than I expected. Having read the books, I was worried that the movie would not do them justice, however, the movie was a success. Though there are obvious changes made in the movie, there were none that felt out of place or that I disliked. They were able to combine aspects into the movie that weren't able to be shown in the book (due to the point of view) and they created a better feeling of the society. Everything flowed nicely and the actors made the horrible reality of the movie believable. Overall, a great movie and I would recommend it to anyone.
