Director Gary Ross uses his camera at the start of the movie as a disturbing tool to give you a sense of the tension that engulfs the kids in this post apocalyptic world as they face the threat of impending death. Once the story gets going he eases up and focuses on their gestures and expressions to express their humanity in an inhumane world where a few dozen of them have been sent as a sacrifice for a revolt that occurred 74 years earlier. Its a compelling tale told well with its central figures revolving around the lead character played by the wonderful Jennifer Lawrence. But its the incredible supporting cast that gives the film its flavor. Lenny Kravitz, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, and Donald Sutherland add generously to the special flavor of this tasty film. Though it veers from the novel at times, it is well acted and visually compelling. Highly recommended!

First, I did not read the book. For some reason the title made me think of sparkling pseudo bloodsuckers. My teenage son read the first book after much persuasion from friends and thought it was great, so off to the movies we go...
Considering the incredible hype surrounding it, I found this movie somewhat lacking. First person narrative is difficult to portrait in film, so flashback sequences must do. Only here these scenes did not clearly reflect the internal monologue (yes, I've gone back to read the book). Too many close ups, too much jiggling and jumping with the camera and an almost anticlimactic conclusion make this movie a less than stellar start to a trilogy.
HOWEVER, the acting saves it. Sure there is some witty dialog, but it really is through the body language and facial expressions of the actors that this movie comes to live.

The movie was truly well done and was a lovely adaptation of a great piece of literature. I do believe that it was incredibly beautiful in cinematography particularly with the scenes in the capitol. It was very believable but left me wanting just a bit more. I love the books...and of course-a movie cannot include everything...

From a cinematography standpoint, this moving was extremely lacking until about 30-40 minutes in, too much "IN YOUR FACE SHAKY CAM TO SHOW IT'S REAL!" however once we start getting to where the main protagonists enter our field of view the shots become a bit more dull in their activity but more consistent in their showing of the atmosphere and pans of the world of Panem. Story wise, amazing, I enjoyed this story more so than Battle Royale in that I view this as a more believable turn of events for our future. Jennifer Lawrence with her uncertainty of her survival once she is chosen emotes quite a bit of emotion that you can feel through the screen. Lenny Kravitz is great as a fashionista and my gods, the beards, I can only wish to have one that amazing. Certain elements can really get move you as well. I wish we had the Hunger Games now as I would totally own.

I watched this movie twice and would definitely watch it again! If you've read the books, you'll love it. They changed things, but that's normal for a movie adaptation. But most stayed extremely close to the book, i loved it! MUCH better than Twilight was.
Now, if you didn't read the books, it's still an amazingly exceptional movie, nothing like i've seen for a while. The first time I watched it, I hadn't read the books, but it still blew my mind. I was speechless when I realized it was 2 and a half hours long, because it didn't feel like it at all.
You need to watch this movie!!
I do not, however, recommend this movie for the younger audiences. Should be at least 12 to view, considering the gore and overall message of war and bloodlust.

Go see it. It is as good as the book. It was fun and kept my interest throughout. It was interesting to listen to the reactions of the other movie goers.
Could have been more ACTION and ADVENTURE though. And maybe some more tension on the "love triangle".

The story was decent enough, for a fantasy movie. In fact, better than most. Could have used a bit more "world" background info, but I guess that's why the books always seem better. Over all some good action, for the guys, with a bit of drama for the ladies... Costumes were a bit freaky, but as I haven't read the books yet, it may be called for. From all reviews I've read, they are a good read. Looking forward to getting my hands on them.

The book was not better, I know you probably thought you'd hear the opposite. Here's the reasoning, the movie accomplished its goal to entertain and take you from point A to point B while keeping you in your seat. No over the top drama, no pounding music to tell you how to feel. It established the story, the characters and their relationships albeit a little slowly and unclearly at times. Unlike the book you can not as a viewer understand what is going on within the characters as well because of the lack of internal dialogue which can leave you feeling a little left out. Touching, moving, and above all entertaining. Worth seeing.

Very good.. and almost as good as the book (which is rare). The interesting part to me was the central government role in things (The Capitol). Beware those who think a strong federal government controlling everything is a good thing - power to the individual, forever!

I liked the casting of Woody Harrelson and Lenny Kravitz in this film. I thought the story had a little bit of everything for everybody. It may have been true to the book but it was slow at times. I felt like the film could have been 20 minutes shorter if the editor cut out some of the slow moving teen romance scenes that really led to much a do about nothing.

After reading the triology, I couldn't wait to see the movie. I was not disappointed. It was action-packed and very true to the book. There were differences, of course, but none that hurt the movie. Great series; great movie!

This movie was more than I expected it to be. I had not read the book before viewing the movie but had been told many good reviews.
For me, it was a whole different type of movie because of the plot or expected outcome. I would recommend this movie to everyone. It never lost my attention and I felt like I could feel the anxiety and fear portrayed by the actors.

I loved this movie! I am a huge fan of the books. I do feel that it's one of those movies, that if you haven't read the series, you will miss things that just cannot be portrayed on the big screen.
They did a wonderful job casting this movie and the actors played the characters very well. I'm definitely going to see it again! And I am looking forward to"Catching Fire".....BRAVO!

I went to see this movie because the trailer looked really exciting and there was a lot of hype and good reviews about Hunger Games. Not being a reader of the book, I had no clue what to expect beyond the trailer. I felt the movie was much much slower that I expected. The acting was really good, but the overall atmosphere of the movie was cold and dull. The director wanted to depict a cold, prison type of feeling throughout the movie, and I think that made it a bit more boring than it had to be. I also felt too much of the movie was "build up" to the actual events. Well over an hour of the movie was pure build up to get the viewer hyped. I think a lot of the 5 star reviews are coming from viewers who were hooked into the book, because as a standalone movie there's no way this could be graded a 5 star. There didn't really seem to be a solid beginning or closure to the plot. I do like the fact that it was very realistic and the child vs child violence was not watered down. Again, this was not a bad movie, just way over hyped. It was 'decent' at best.
One last comment, I feel too many of the adult male characters in this movie seemed... flamboyant to say the least. Almost every adult male was hitting you over the head with blatant homosexuality. I have no problem with gays, but I do feel they went overboard.

If you are a big fan of the Hunger Games you must remember that the movie simply cannot live up to the book. With this in mind, I genuinely loved the movie. Jennifer Lawrence delivered a very impressive performance, and after being wary of her as Katniss I am now a fan. The one significant part of the movie that was unimpressive was Woody Harrelson's performance as Haymitch. He did little justice to his character, and his performance was not even close to what Haymitch was like in the books. Overall, the movie has some plot lines that don't follow up with the book as to be expected, but otherwise a very gripping and entertaining movie whether you have read the books or not.

The good: This is an enjoyable story that will cause a young person to think about the nature of government. The main characters are likable and display good values in the face of disaster.
The bad: Too many camera shots are zoomed way too far in and it is so shaky that I became disoriented and uncomfortable throughout the entire movie, to the point that it almost ruined the movie for me. The themes of desensitized voyeurism and cold violence in no way are appropriate for a young teenager. This movie should be rated "R"
