Worth the wait!

I read the books as they came out, and have been waiting for a movie since the first book. And it was worth the wait! My husband and I both enjoyed it, plenty of action, they didn't "mush it up" with the love stuff, it was extremely intense, emotional and powerful. No, they didn't put everything in it, but they never can and most of the changes were great. They added a point of view you don't get in the book. My only complaint is I just don't hate President Snow like I should. All other acting was superb. Overall I LOVED IT!

Not Enough

I am a fan and I was let down. The left out important details. They did not explain the relationships that Katniss had developed or had already had. They didn't explain the Avox's or why Haymitch was an alcoholic. They didn't express that even though Effie appeared proud and cheerful that it was all in fear. They didn't emphasize the ignorance of the people in The Capital.They sugar coated the killings and made it hard to see with the excessive shaking of the camera. The arena scenes were rushed and I understand we only have so much time in a movie but the missed pivotal points. I think the only person who's role was shown correctly was President Snow's. That was the only dark moment I felt in the movie. I just hope the 2nd movie is better. The Hunger Games wasn't horrible but it definitely could have been better.

Best Movie Ever

The Hunger Games was such a great movie, Saw it at the midnight showing and I wasn't disappointed. What was awesome was to see all the different age ranges of people that came to see the movie. It was nice. I need to reread the books. Katniss was so amazing in her role, and Peeta did a great job. Gale had his chance, I am sorry if anyone is a Gale fan but he did have his chance. LOL. Jennifer Lawrence was such a beautiful addition to the cast. Her and Peeta really stole it. Even though they missed some stuff from the books it was still an amazing movie.

GO HUNGER GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had high expectations going in and I was not disappointed. As soon as the lights dimmed I fell into the movie as easily as I fell into the book and I didn't come up for air until the credits rolled.

Yes, I did miss the excellent character development from the books but there are only so many details you can pack into a film and the screenwriter chose wisely.

GO see the movie!

I had never believed in true love, but after viewing this cinematic treat, i find myself having hope once again. The films heroine katniss everdeen is played impeccably by the talented jennifer lawrence, who creates sensual sparks with her co star josh hutcherson, playing peeta mellark. The film is everything a good movie should be: romantic, dramatic, and suspensful. I highly recommend this gem to anyone looking for a good ass time. It stayed true to the book and leaves you wanting more peeta and katniss moments along with the anticipation of the next movie. The acting, the cinematography, the screenplay and so much more make this movie truly phenominal.

I read the book first as many people probably did. It was a good job overall. However, they did not convey a big plot in the movie that they were also battling the elements to prevent them from dying of natural causes/exposure. There was the big struggle to find water in the book and in the movie it just seemed readily available and no problem. They pretty much focused on the kids hacking away at each other. Which is a warning to parents because I saw a dad with two younger boys in the theater, and it was super-violent and not appropriate- even if they have read the book. I was proud of all the teens in theater, at first during previews they were super loud, but once the show started they were focused and became very emotional during the film. I saw how they related to the teens so the movie does a good job in that respect-enjoy!

Great movie adaptation! Jennifer Lawrence did an amazing job as Katniss. Glad that it was no so bloody and I could take my kids (ages 9 and 13). They both loved the film.

As movie adaptations go, a great film!

The Hunger Games novels are so well-written and detailed that the task of adapting them for the screen was undoubtedly daunting. Thankfully, Suzanne Collins was in on the job, and this film is thoroughly entertaining and well-written. Casting was impeccable, and they managed to turn Katniss' inner monologue (which rules pretty much the entire second half of the book) in the arena into a relatively seamless whole. The story has a very different feel to it - you don't realize how singly focused the books are on Katniss' perspective (which is very hard to translate to the screen) until the movie points it out to you. The film allows us to consider other points of view - especially Peeta's. The violent scenes were not unnecessarily graphic or gory, and the tender moments were very well done. Several important plot points didn't make the screen - but this is just to be expected with a novel of this scope. All in all a great experience and a job well done! Doesn't hold a candle to the books, but I loved it anyway.

I was very pleased with this adaptation and I've been a fan of the book for a while. Yes there were a few things left out and added but I thought they were overall faithful and the additions were good ones. I especially loved all the Katniss and Peeta scenes, and I think perhaps the best scene was the "District 11" part. The actors were amazing. The only complaint I have is the shaky cam effect, it was a little much at times but didn't take away from the movie in my opinion. Definitely go see it.

After reading the books - not once, but twice! - I wasn't sure how I would like the movie adaptation. After dragging my 15 year old son to the midnight premiere, I have to say that I absolutely loved seeing the characters I've become so fond of on the big screen. It was completely enjoyable, and despite missing the full sequence of events of Katniss and Peeta in the cave (where was the rain?!), I can't wait to go and watch it again!! A definite must see - with one word of warning. This is not 'art house' fare. This movie is truly just for entertainment value. The drama is there, but if you're a big fan of Woody Allen movies this likely isn't the movie for you, but 'May the Odds be Ever in Your Favor'!

I was very excited to see this movie, and wasn't disappointed! The one thing that I would say needed to be changed was that the camera was constatnly moving, and it was hard to keep up with at first, but it followed closely to the plot of the novel, there was excellent acting (Haymitch and Effie were very funny!), and the costuming of people in the Capitol was exciting!

Generally, a review is on a movie one has seen. In this case, I'm reviewing my kids' experience. I hesitated to send them to a midnight movie on a school night, but I'm so glad that I did. My 17-year-old son said he cried 3 times during the movie. My 14-year-old daughter is already looking for babysitting jobs to earn money to go see it again. The words they used most when telling me about it were "powerful" and "moving." Again, I had misgivings, but their faces, their reaction was worth it. I have never seen them like this after a movie.

Not as true to the book as your led to believe

Alright, I walked into the theater with the full intention of laughing to death at Haymitch Abernathy's (Woody Harrelson) funny and rude remarks however was sadly disappointed when I discovered he was barely in the film. The focus was taken away from the following four things that I noticed:
1) No story about Avox's
2) District 11 Bread to Katniss
3) Lack-Of-Haymitch
4) No focus on "Prep Team"

Let me explain number 4, Cinna's prep team is non-existent essentially. We don't meet them personally at all.
Also, I felt the film tried to be too kid friendly. I was hoping for some Battle Royal action going on but was let down with A thrown knife and shaking camera that while the camera shook would end up in the actor. I wish the budget and gore of the film went up. Other than that everything was nice, I enjoyed the focus on President Snow and overall I rate this move 4/5 stars.

excellent movie

We went to see the midnight showing, my wife and I, and our three kids, ages13,11,and 9. Personally, I thought we were crazy, but we had all read the books and it was pretty neat doing something like that as a family. I was a little worried about how all the killing in the story would be shown, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it was portrayed. Obviously the story has violence in it, but they did not show much gore or unnecessary violence, which made me feel better about it. It was very true to the book, which was nice also. My children all loved it and cannot wait for the next movies to come out. It is a rare event to be able to see a movie together as a family and all be entertained. I would give it the highest marks.

The characters were perfect, exactly how I pictured them! Stuck to the book pretty closely. I was a little disappointed in a few things-her nails weren't painted with fire, Madge was not in it so the pin came from elsewhere, also a few parachutes were missed, Peeta was not drugged, etc. Otherwise, I loved loved loved it! I want to see it over and over again!

Very Good Movie

I recently read the books and became a fan so I wanted to see how the movie would be. They did a very good job of staying true to the story. Obviously a few things were changed as usually happens but it wasn't anything crucial. My biggest problem was the camera action at times, it should have stayed still during some of the fight scenes it was making me dizzy. There were a few rushed moments but I enjoyed it overall seeing how they made her the girl on fire was pretty cool.

I like the fact that the movie took off from the start and did not lag at all. I didn't feel like I was at the theatre for 2 1/2 hours. Greatness! Also, Katniss was off the hook great! Definitely gonna be a great series to get hooked on! I guess now I will go back and begin reading the books! LOL!

I was ready to see a great movie and was very disappointed. Half the movie was filmed in choppy shaking camera shots with fast splicing. I understand that you can use this instead of real action, but they used it way too much in this movie. Flashbacks were stupid. action scenes were dull. they took a great story and made a mediocre movie. Little girls will LOVE IT, but the film was passable at best.

i was very pleased with the movie overall. it stayed true to the book i think as best it could have without needing an intermission. the casting was well done. the emotion conveyed in the book i think was very well played. even having had read the book and knowing exactly what was going to happen it was still exciting the whole way through.
bravo! can't wait for the rest of the series to be brought to visual fruition!

I think Suzanne Collins should be proud of how they stayed so true to the story from the actors lines to the flare of the Capitol Citizens. Slight changes were made to condense the film length and to pull the story together better for the non readers. I liked the acting, none of it was overdone, it felt true. The cinematography had that raw footage quality at times allowing for confusion and anxiety to build during a violent or climactic part without the need for over the top graphics. I am a huge Hunger Games Fan and look very much forward to Catching Fire and MockingJay!

I've been anticipating this movie since they announced it last year and it did not disappoint. While there were a few things from the book they left out I would have liked to see, the overall pace and feel of the movie was on par with the book. Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss was outstanding and Woody Harrelson could not have done a better Haymitch. I really enjoyed this movie and can't wait until I see this one again and for Catching Fire to come to theatres Nov 2013.

A Worthy Cinematic Take of the Book

I went into the movie trying to keep my hopes neutral. I'm a big watcher of book-to-movies, and I'm always very disappointed. This is not one of those movies, though.
My friend and I went in 40 minutes early and still managed to get stuck in the second row, so I think being so close to the screen ruined my experience a little bit, but otherwise I enjoyed it. The intensity was palpable, and the actress who played Katniss did what she could to make up for the first person narration in the books. Having seen so much of Katniss's personality in the book did make the movie pale in comparison but not much could be done about it.
Overall, very few details were spared and it was interesting to see how the movie would twist things. I would recommend it to a friend, for sure.

Initial reaction to The Hunger Games: It was better than I expected, but didn't fully deliver. Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss is really the saving grace of the movie. Her portrayal of a very introverted, yet emotionally powerful female lead is superb. She captured some of the more subtle essences of Katniss' struggle masterfully. Some standout supporting roles were provided by Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket, Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickman, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy, and an excellent portrayal of President Snow by Donald Sutherland. On the other hand, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark was very okay. Considering how essential his character is and the fact that he is the second most emotionally powerful character in the story, that was disappointing. To be fair, this may have been primarily due to the pacing of the movie, which felt at times like a sprint through the forest of The Hunger Games arena. There was not much time for emotional connectivity with any of the characters (especially the connection between Peeta and Katniss) and the brief moments of pause were at times awkward. Liam Hemsworth who played Gale pretty much looked like a generic douche straight out of the Twilight movies: he was completely unmemorable. However, Amandla Stemsberg as Rue was excellent. Overall, most of the younger supporting actors were weak (other the one mentioned above), but luckily this didn't completely drag the movie down considering Katniss comprised 85% or more of the screen-time and most of the adult actors were strong. The screenplay did a great job of condensing the story into a two and a half hour movie, without really sacrificing important plot details (although one character that was not as largely present in the book was given practically a leading role in the screenplay), but did a shoddy job of character development and an even shoddier job of overall thematic delivery. For a novel was that dark, ominous and honestly as disturbing as The Lord of the Flies was the first time I read it, I just didn't get the same emotional impact. I realize most of this seems like criticism, but as I said, Jennifer Lawrence gave a very honest, heartfelt depiction of Katniss and considering the story is primarily about her character's struggle, they definitely did a great job there. Rotten Tomatoes gives it an aggregated score of 87%, which for the most part, I agree with. I'll give it a 4 out of 5.

According to my granddaughter who read all the books the movie was true to the book with only a couple slight variations that were meaningless. She loved it, thought it was great. She commented that the dress that Catness wore was so well described in the book that what she saw on screen matched what she had imagined it to look like when she read the book. Kudos to the costume directors! For me, the casting was awesome! I remember Donald Sutherland from when he was much younger - excellent choice for his character. Kudos to the casting crew as well! Awesome film .. will buy the DVD as soon as it comes out! Trust me, for the most part, I do not buy movies. I think Avitar was the last movie I bought and before that couldn't tell you. EXCELLENT film, it will not disappoint. The violence was not senseless which makes a huge difference in how it is perceived. Great job by the author and the film makers in bringing it to the big screen!
