I loved the movie. It only touched the surface on a lot of the issues that were described in depth in the book but I believe that was due to time restraints. If you read the book first, you already know the characters and their issues. I thought it stayed true to the book. I liked being able to see behind the scenes of the games keepers and President Snow. Read the book then see the movie

Really enjoyed this movie! Glad my fiancee suggested it! Very emotion felt film. Only disappointment was some of the filming was very jerky and hard to follow. Otherwise excellent!

I am usually critical of movie adaptations of books I have read, but this one surprised me. While someone who hasn't read the books might find it pretty rushed, I think that anyone who did read them will enjoy it. They definitely toned down the violence from what it could have been, but obviously they are targeting a teen audience, so that isn't a surprise. I thought the casting was great and visually most everything looked just how I pictured it. Great job- I can't wait for the other two!!!

Overall, really enjoyed the movie. The entire premise of the book is disturbing, so it's advised that you come to terms with it or don't go see the movie. The first half of the film (or about that) is setting things up - Katniss and Gale's relationship, life in district 12, the Reaping - a lot of detail is left out understandably, but you get the idea. All the main characters are well cast - amazingly so. There are some differences from the book to the movie, but nothing that alters the story terribly. I was impressed with the actually killing scenes, as I worried what they would actually show. They were not gory or as detailed as in the book, and while the scenes are bloody (just the thought of children killing children, and some of them seemingly enjoying it is creepy and awful), no scene dwelled on the killings. Even the opening of the Games, where it is really a bloodbath is handled with quick camera shots that give you the idea without dwelling on it.
I think they could have spent more time setting up the relationship between the capitol and the districts. My husband, who never read the books, didn't understand why they were all so colorful. And I had to explain to my son that the people in the capitol's children don't participate in the Reaping, which is one reason why they see it as a fun sporting event. Gruesome concept. I may have liked it better if Katniss were narrating it.
All in all, great movie. Scary, thought provoking, sad. My kids are 9 & 11, and they handled it well and enjoyed it. However, I don't think it's for every 9 & 11 year old - I think parents need to really decide if they think their own kids can handle it.

I loved the entire movie, but after reading each book at least 16 times there were somethings I missed. I understand that the entire book couldn't fit in the movie, so the only thing I would have like to see was more time in the cave and Katniss cleaning Peeta up after she finds him, But overall it was one of the best movie adaptaions of a book I've seen

I was so pleased with the adaptation from book to movie. I looked at my watch when the actual games began and we were an hour and a half into the movie. I was concerned that they might short change the details of the games, but thankfully the movie lasted another hour. Great Movie!

My son drug me to the midnight showing of this movie. Personally I enjoyed the experience of the atmosphere of the audience more than the movie itself. That is not to say that it was not a good movie, because it is a great movie! The only thing that was a little too graphic and gory for me was the scene where dogs are eating a young man. The sounds of the man screaming were incredibly haunting to me, and you could kind of see his face.. That is an image, as a visual learner, I will probably never get out of my mind. I hate horror movies and being scared so truly not my thing. However I really liked the plot line of the movie, and my son said he was impressed in that the movie followed the book pretty closely, all but one thing (how the heroine got her pin). I enjoyed the romantic storyline except of course this all-American would have loved to have seen the heroine and her real boyfriend together. My heart broke for him as he watched her kiss Peter.
All in all, I would really recommend this movie. Although it's more geared toward teenagers than the young or the old. :)

One thing that got me, too much jumpy movement, made me sort of motion sick. Wish they had pulled out more! Good rep of the books, missing some details, but overall. And glad it wasn't as graphic as the books (in bloodbath). Rue was the scene that got us.

I'm sure I'm alone here, but I wondered if we (the ticket buyers) are any better than the people of Panem who excitedly watch the annual Hunger Games = (people dying.)
I just had a hard time with the whole premise being about killing people. (young & innocent!) And WE are watching that for our entertainment. And teens love it. ?

I loved the movie! I thought they did an excellent job following the book. Of course there were a few differences, but there needs to be. The movie is 2 and a half hours long and still you wouldn't be able to fit everything in. Full of intense action The Hunger Games kept my attention throughout. I did have a problem with the movement of the camera. I have read that some were only bothered at the beginning of the movie, but I was bothered with nausea throughout the entire movie. I was sitting in the 4th row of the theater so that might have played a part in that.

I was disappointed that the character development was so poor. While I understand that the majority of thee audience had probably read the book, like I did, it still would have been nice to feel more for each of the individual tributes, Gale, and learn more about the Districts.
The intensity in the arena wasn't up to par with the way I felt while reading the book. I guess since it was pg-13?? Finally, I didn't understand some of the plot changes. What about Madge?
Some things I did like... Jennifer Lawrence is a great Katniss. The Capital city looked and felt like high society (it would have been nice to see/feel more of the tributes' reactions to the lavishness and wastefulness of the Capital). I also liked that the arena itself looked like it was described in the book.
My husband, who hasn't read the book, enjoyed the movie more than I did. But there were quite a few things he didn't understand (the number of times each child's name was entered in the reaping, the hatred towards the Capital...he said he felt oppression but nothing more...and the team that Katniss had helping her, just to name a few. He would also have liked to know more about the districts and their tributes.)
I will admit to being curious to see how the next couple movies are handled. I hope to see some more thoughtfulness about the feelings of the population of PanAm.

This was a good movie, good story line and probably really good for people who haven't read the books, but if you didn't and were very excited about seeing the movie it was a little bit of a let down. I was disappointed they left out a lot of important details that will be important if they want to continue making the series into movies which I think will end up kind of ruining the story. I would see it either way but be prepared to be slightly disappointed if u read the books.

This was the best movie of the year, definitely! In response to the review that said "not a fan of children killing children", it has more to say than that, and that's not what the film was about at all! It stayed true to the book, and was absolutely amazing!!

The cast in this movie is amazing, but like all book/movie projects, the movie falls short of the book. So much is left out, the whole movie is external and none of the internal conflict is seen. That's what makes the book. My husband has not read the books and he hated it. There is no background on Panem, no background on the families.

Great movie, if you read the book. As a big fan of the series I, of course, had read the book however one in my group did not and was left behind. Character choice was also not prime for many rolls however those of Katniss, Gale and Rue were wonderful. As I have read the entire trilogy it was hard to see the movie end! Soundtrack, although not actually featured in the movie, was one of the best out for any genre of movie in a long while, I don't think this is the last we'll see of The Civil Wars but Taylor Swifts involvement is what really perfected the movie as a whole.

Was concerned going in that in an effort to sensationalize the producers/directors might engage in some substantial deviation from the book plot. While there was some I was pleasantly surprised it was very little. To the contrary they did a very good job at making the minds eye come into more vivid focus on screen While there were a few of the characters which did not conform to at least this viewers conception of the book character - I for the most part got over that realtively quickly as the movie character was made more attractive in slightly different ways.
Always a joy when a book you very much enjoyed is not ruind by Hollywood!!! When do we get book two?

just. so. good. My only criticisms are minor: Katniss' height and figure were not as average as in the books. Also, so of the fight/action scenes were kind of filmed in a herky-jerky way that was hard to watch and focus on. Both of us had a headache, after watching on such a big screen!
But other than that, I can't complain about anything. The characters were all wonderful in their roles!

The camera movement in the very beginning of the film is so bad that it made me nauseous. Otherwise, I loved it! I read all 3 books last week so I have almost total recall of the story. The movie wasn't exactly the same but it didn't stray too much from the original storyline. The actors were fabulous and the scenery was very believable in my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed the film! Can't wait for the next one.

This movie was not exactly as one pictures while reading the books but everything changed was almost always just as high quality as the book. They did not butcher the book but instead made a movie that enhanced the books.

My husband and I actually got out w/o the kids to see this one. I read the books. He didn't. We both loved it! Movie follows book pretty closely. Theatre was packed. Everyone quiet and into the movie. Great casting. Believable relationships. To be as detailed as the book, it would have had to have been a 3 hr. plus movie. Book shares more details, but movie was still great! Looking forward to next one!

Almost exactly followed the book. Few minor details left out, but that should be expected in a 2 and a half hour movie. Camera work was great, acting was great, scenery and costumes were great. And the soundtrack used in the movie was phenomenal. Many times during intense moments, there was NO background track, which added to the intensity of the movie. First half hour was VERY emotional.
For those of you trying to compare this to Potter and Twilight, shame on you. This is an entirely different book and series and should NEVER be compared to those others.
