Here's the key to the entire film's plot. Its not really about Bond. He's an aging blunt object being manipulated as used as a piece on the board by M, as the action sequences have Bond with an ear piece taking order and directions from HQ at every turn. The movie's plot and villain focus on her history as a director, and her ability to be cold, calculating, and ultimately uncaring for her OOs. She goes as far as to lie to Bond and MI:6 to get Bond back in the game to cover up her mistakes, clearly showing she's at any moment talking in double-speak.
For the Bond die hards out there, understand this movie hits ALL the right buttons. Sam Mendes is a huge Bond fan, and it has the feel of a kid who had a chance to make a Bond movie and include his favorite pieces from the 22 bond films to date.
It feels and acts like a sequel to Casino Royale, but there was a missed opportunity to tie it back to Vesper in a key scene in the Macau casino, but once again, die-hards will get it without it being stated, casual fans will not.
There are references aplenty, twists and character introductions from the longstanding book and film series. There are obvious ones, the addition of Q and his gadgets, and others - an indirect reference to Jaws. Bardem is perhaps the most complete Bond Villain to date, as the camera and characters give him ultimate stage presence, even so far as to being bigger, badder, and many times better than Bond. The interrogation scene is reminiscent of the Man with the Golden Gun, a villain with the utmost respect for Bond, who cherishes his skill, but ultimately is pushing him around the game board as well.
Please note the following make or break this film's enjoyment for movie-goers. If you are a casual Bond fan, or if you demand explanations for every single plot point of a film, you may be disappointed. Mendes either assumed we were all fans and assumed that by skipping a few explanations, or he deferred to my previous comment that he was a fan and just didn't care to explain why certain things were included.
Bond is again a hard-drinking womanizer, and there are the Diamonds are Forever and Never say Never Again themes of an aging Bond throughout the film. Its a little hard to take, watching your hero be physically unable to do what he's best at, but it also adds an element of humanism and insecurity in Bond that makes him a complete character, not just a caricature. Also, the 3rd act swings heavily towards Bond's background and path toward becoming a OO, which feels like Craig may be done as Bond, as his arc is now complete.

Bond is known for his gadgets, and fancy cars. There was a huge lack of those in this movie. Less action than normal, less stunts. Seems like they are lacking creativity.

Not as many gadgets as in past Bond films but there are a couple of moments that will blow old Bond fans away. Story develops to show how the spy game has evolved with Bond and MI6 adapting albeit reluctantly. Still the beautiful women but Bond also revels more about how he became who he is. Orphans make the best agents! Defintely a must see!

Daniel Craig is great, Judie Dench is great, Javier Bardem is weird, everyone else is expendable or expended. Perfectly pleasant movie. The only problems are that Daniel Craig seems a little old, though still serviceable, the evil genius is just a super-hacker with a mommy complex, maybe that is the new evil, and this movie has nothing distinctively "Bond" about it, which may be of no interest to new viewers. A glossy action movie with a little thrill.

I am not sure I am happy that James Bond is getting old. The movie was not up to 007 standards. The chase scenes got a bit long, the "sex" scenes were lacking and there were 3 separate really bad camera cuts... very sloppy... but it is James Bond so you have to go see it

Final thoughts on "Skyfall" (keeping it as spoiler free as possible) now that I've had a minute to think about it.
In the past 5 years or so, the question of whether or not the Bond film franchise is still relevant has been bandied about. Do we still want or need an aloof, womanizing, boozing, gambling, dry-humored secret agent? Has the Bourne franchise uprooted the 007 films as the new go-to action/spy franchise? "Skyfall" takes these questions head-on and gives us a definitive answer.
Throughout the first half of the film, we're told how this secret agent business is a young man's game. There isn't room for 007, who has had both his triumphs and has his scars, both in the films and from critics of the films, who pretty much panned his prior outing, 2008's "Quantum of Solace". The same is asked of M, first played by Dame Judi Dench in 1995's "Goldeneye". It's refreshing that in the past 17 years we've progressed to a point where having a woman as M isn't as scandalous as it was in 1995, but by "Skyfall", even Dench's old bulldog of the head of MI6 seems a bit played out.
These issues come to a head as Javier Bardem's Silva steals a hard drive containing the names of all NATO agents working undercover in terrorist cells across the globe and begins revealing them online. How do a couple of Cold War relics handle this new threat of cyber-terrorism? First, you go to the Q Branch of MI6. Meet the new Q, played for the first time on film not by the late Desmond Llewelyn, but by a younger Ben Whishaw, who fills the former Q's cranky old loafers nicely.
As for Bond himself, the pre-title sequence events have left him wallowing in the excesses of the character most often cited as being antiquated --- alcohol and women. However, "Skyfall" isn't some save-the-world adventure. This is a personal story about M, Bond, and Silva, who has ties to M's past. In telling such an intimate story, we see that the trysts with the Bond girls are nothing more than a means to an end. Bond's deepest relationship with anyone in his world is with M, who is both a mother figure to Bond and the one woman he respects.
Around the midpoint of the film, Silva asks Bond what his hobbies are. Bond's reply? "Resurrection." That statement perfectly encapsulates the last half of the film. For the first time, the filmmakers both embrace the 50 year legacy of the character on film (be on the lookout for a certain DB5 with headlight machine guns and an ejector seat) as well as the pasts of Bond and M, and blow that legacy up in a grand pyrotechnic display. Where does that leave the franchise? The last scene gives us Bond's earlier answer. Resurrected. Try not to smile as Bond enters MI6 (complete with coat rack), has a playful exchange with the new Moneypenny, and passes beyond that leather padded door into M's office where he receives his next assignment.
Sometimes the old ways really are the best ways.

Skyfall has all your favorite characters, plus a few new ones. Lots of action and a great storyline to set the Bond series up for plenty of new Bond Films to come. Time went by ralther quickly although you were in the movie for 2 hours and 23 minutes. A must see!

Bond is back, with a great mixture of old and new. We come away intensely caring for this hero who is seen by some as a vestige of a vanished era. We learn more about Bond and those we have associated with him in over 50 years of films. Javier Bardem, as Silva, plays a truly menacing villain. Judi Dench continues to play a great "M". Daniel Craig gives us a great insight into Bond, a combination of toughness and hurt. Locations are great like those expected in Bond films. This film gives us a great place to continue the 007 tradition.

The most "Fleming" Bond of all

Those familiar with Bond only through the films may find Skyfall a bit grim and not as flashy as what they're accustomed to. However, fans of Fleming's novels will discover a significant artistic breakthrough has been hatched under the guidance of Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes: this Bond, despite having no basis in a Fleming novel, has more in common with Fleming's style (and his secret agent) than any previous film in the series. The tone and characterizations would surely make Fleming proud, and to at least some of us who have faithfully followed the series since its inception, this is a welcome bounty of authentic Bond detailing. Craig and Bardem especially shine, but Fiennes, Dench, Watts, and Whishaw also excel. The only (slight) negative: the theme song, while nicely done, lacks the punch that this film deserves.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors

Awesome Bond movie! As a family we all look forward to new Bond movies coming out and this was absolutely worth every minute in the theatre! The story line was great, action packed and yet with Daniel Craig we, as the audience, saw a glimpse of his vulnerability and emotions with his relationship with Judi Dench. Javier Bardem was the villain that was so evil we detested his character. Will be looking forward to seeing Daniel Craig in the next James Bond movie!

A dark take on Bond, but well worth the wait. So much to say, but I don't want to spoil any of the fun. Let's just say it has all the things you look for in a Bond movie. Action, beautiful women, a great sense of humor, an AMAZING villain. Add to this a little pathos and it's a sure fire hit!! 50 years old and still looking sexy, Mr. Bond.

Solid action, the usual worldwide scenery and great overall (save for the sad ending). A nice continuation of the greatest movie series ever. Hard to imagine it's been 50 years.

Enjoyed movie. A little slow in the middle. Had charm of old Bond movies, yet updated with present day action and technology. Saddened by surprise ending. Craig holds his own admirally in group of actors who have played Bond. Mendes direction enlivened the pic. Well done!

I am just slightly older than the anniversary, but Bond always amazes me. This Bond is less pithy but still has the usual sarcastic remarks. The story line here was stronger than the overall action but was good for the plot. Of course, Bond must be viewed on the big screen and then restudied at home later to see the full effects and to see all the pieces.
