.... that do not strike a resonating chord with most in the movie audience but perhaps this is due to some personal therapeutic need by writer-director-actress Miranda July. "Paw paw" not withstanding there are a few moments that could pique your interest but these do not last long and they end up going nowhere. Miranda July has a future as an actress .... not sure about writing and directing - time will tell. Quirky with potential that sputters out. A plaid rhino horn down.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

One of the finer things in life for me, as a movie buff, is the crop of independent films to complement the stream of mainstream flicks...makes life more entertaining & interesting. I've only been exploring them in great detail since 2006 thanks to a friend of mine in Kansas City who got me to go with him frequently to KC's wonderful Screenland Theater...here I was treated to films that I'd known existed, but had just never taken the time to explore. And, as is the case with mainstream cinema, there are both extremes of quality in this particular field.
Unfortunately, THE FUTURE plummeted to nearly the bottom of the heap for me. Don't get me wrong: I LOVE it when directors take us on untrodden paths of storytelling that challenge us, make us think, & as a result engage us in lively conversation as we leave the theater. As my friend & I sat through this excruciatingly painful hour & a half of what's being passed off as art, we kept hoping SOMETHING worthy, sensible, or even half-way exciting would happen. And waiting. And hoping. And what did we get? An "actress/writer/director" so enmeshed in her own over-inflated self-importance that she apparently has convinced herself that what she produced would be met with high praise from the independent film set. In reality, the film was nothing less than masturbatory, with utterly no rhyme or reason, skirting from one train of thought to another, with both Miranda and Hamish acting like they were loaded to the gills on Quaaludes through the majority of the movie. My friend remarked at the merciful end how the film appeared to be some college art project--some of which are brilliant, others screaming the word, "FAIL." The impression it left me with is that Miranda APPEARS to be of the David Lynch/William S. Burroughs school of thought...but my God, even THEIR films had some depth to them & could hold my interest.
When I read the blurb about this little charmer, with its plot revolving around the adoption of a cat (cat lover: check) and the altering of time & space (fantasy/sci-fi lover: check), I was VERY intrigued and had such high hopes that this would be a unique & fascinating film. How sad that it turned out to be the polar opposite.
Take what I'm sharing here as you will; read the inexplicable reviews of praise here and decide for yourself if this is something you want to spend your money & time on. Caveat emptor.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

After seeing the Future and her previous film, I have come to believe that Miranda July is a better actress than writer/director.
This is a challenging film. It takes the audiences to bizarre places, and doesn't always reward them for taking them there.
I can respect her vision and audacity to create something completely original, but at times it feels she was just trying too hard.
However, Hamish Linklater and July are worth the price of admission alone. I would have paid to watch this sit on a couch for 90 minutes with their computers. In essence that's what I really wish the film had been about.
In the end I wasn't sorry I saw it, but I would only recommend it to a limited set.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

A wise and honest film. I went with my sister, a psychotherapist, who found it fascinating that when she finally started to pursue her sense of herself (to create her dances)instead of keeping with it,she started to watch other women do their dances freely and with abandon, and she became weaker and weaker for the comparing, then called a found phone number and went to a unknown man, for a way, any way, to run away from her inability to come up to her ambition. While her boyfriend drifted into magical thinking. He couldn't start much of anything. but he could, through denial, stop everything. And the wounded Cat, forever in eternal hope. For those willing to step into this world and ponder life from the film's POV. A profound film.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Just awful... I could not wait for this to be over. Had I not been in the middle of a row of people, I would have left the theatre. Pretentious, boring and full of it's own self importance. The talking cat made me want to scream...
No, I do not recommend this movie.

An amazingly creative and entertaining film. July comes from a performance art background and this aesthetic gives her films an edginess not found in most Hollywood "formula" films.
There are surreal elements in this film so a narrative literalist might not like it, but it is so refreshing to see a whole new approach to film making. And, of course, M. July, who acts in the movie as well as having written and directed it, is a very beautiful woman.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Miranda July's latest film, The Future, is terrific. It's full of off-beat humor that it truly funny and original. But her work also conveys something deeper, a sensitivity and poignancy that reasonates long after the film has ended. I highly recommend this film.
