When I went and saw the movie I personally wasnt expecting a lot from of it but I ended up getting a lot more from it. I absolutely loved it!! A lot of people are not giving this movie a chance and saying bad things about it (and everyone has a right to their opinion) I simply suggest to watch it with an open mind. Yes, for me the first 10 minutes I was a little lost and was not really into it but then it picks up a lot and im totally pulled into this amazing world of John Carter. I laughed, cried a little, and it even had me in suspense. This was a really good movie and please everyone give it a chance and go see it!! Hopefully you will love it as much as i did. :)

By the book -- John Carter great storytelling

From the opening, "John Carter" follows the Edgar Rice Burroughs book to the letter, a rarity in these "do anything to jazz up a story" times.
Carter, a former Confederate soldier, discovers a hidden cave with strange writings and awakens on a place called Barsoom, which he discovers is Mars.
This planet though has air and water and a variety of intelligent creatures who mostly keep to themselves. They are all warlike, but seem to fight amongst their own kind.
Carter first discovers Tharks, four-armed giant green creatures who live more like Vikings than humans. They aren't sure exactly what he is, but his ability to jump long distances and great strength intrigue them.
He is stunned to see flying vehicles and fighting among them is a beautiful woman.
He saves her life, and discovers she is a princess of the city of Helium.
Her knowledge of science and his planet astonishes him.
Their adventures, the defense of Helium, his quest to return to Earth, his discovery of other intelligent species on the planet and his conquering of all of them make this movie a delight to watch.
This movie is a good famiily one, as long as parents go with their under-13 children. This might be a reason to read the Burroughs series, then the rest of his work.
While this is not "Harry Potter" style fantasy, its well done in all regards and will give viewers many subjects for discussion, a rarity with today's cinema.
I'd been told that the better you know the book, the better the movie and this is absolutely true.
It's like the movie "Dune" this way. It will make much more sense if you are famillliar with the plot before you go, but that is true of "Harry Potter," "Twilight," and yes, "Hunger Games" as well.
This movie has not done big box office business for the above reason, so at least read a "Cliffs Notes" version of this book and go see "John Carter" before it leaves theaters -- which will be very soon.

I actually liked plots in the movie. very interesting. The characters in the film were excellent. I wouldnt take a little child to this movie, some fighting in it.Other than that, Disney did a good job with this one.

I went to see the movie with our kids and we enjoyed every bit of it. The storyline was good and the characters were convincing. I didn't know the story of John Carter until I had done a little bit of online research. After watching the movie, we're ready for more. The special effects and graphics made the movie very believable, and very adventurous. I recommend it for families to see it together.

Actually I wasn't to thrilled going into this movie. I was hesitant in the beginning, but I gradually began to accept it, and then at the end I really started to like it. The last ten minutes were (in my opinion) the best time frame in the whole movie. The end was just pretty cool. Definitely a original plot/idea with multiple writers I see. Good acting, good action, humorous in some parts, and dramatic in others. A pretty good movie with a decent length to it. Well worth my time and whoever likes adventure and "a whole different world" type of movie, go see this movie. I saw the hobbit trailer in here, (not my first time seeing it) and I am super pumped for that by the way even though it is months away....

Everyone already knows nobody lives on Mars - so the argument that we have to discount this story written a hundred years ago before we knew that is bunk.
We don't know that the Star Wars planets sustain life either and we all enjoyed that series.
This movie is just plain fun - you can imagine yourself on the moon or Mars jumping great distances in low gravity - we all did at some time (remember Moon Shoes with springs in the 70's) in our lives.
The effects are well done and the war line simple for kids under 10 to follow (blue team is good guys - red team is bad guys - green team saves blue team). I think this movie is OK for kids about 8 and up.
I see news reports that this will be a financial failure - but that isn't the movie's fault - the marketing was an afterthought and they probably could have saved some money on some of the war scenes to keep costs down, but it was worth my ticket price.
I hope this movie picks up more of a following because I would like to see more of the series adventures in the future.

I found the movie very entertaining with a little bit of everything to offer with wit, humor, action, sci-fi, romance, old fashion yet futuristic - what more could you ask for? The CGI wasn't bad, the aliens were well done and actually they delivered a pretty good performance. Looking forward to a sequel.

I think people forget that the movie is never as good as the book its based on. Always go into a movie expecting a new experience and you wont be disappointed. Given that I think the movie was fun and entertaining. I didn’t give it 5 stars because there were parts that took a bit too long to work through between the action and story progression leading to a bit of down time. Overall though, it was unique, fun and made me smile. Now I would have to say the best part was the dog, everyone in the theatre couldn’t stop laughing as that thing ran across mars like speedy Gonzalez. For those who feel the story has been told before, remember this: There are no new stories, only new tellings.

Disney kinda botched this one. I've been a fan of the John Cater series ever since I read it in high school so I was excited when I heard it was becoming a film. Unfortunately, this classic sci-fi tale gets bogged down with bad dialogue, and wooden performances. The cgi looks great, and the green Tharks are rendered beautifully, in fact, the cgi aliens give us the best acting performances! With a $250 million budget you think they'd have a decent script.. Guess it all went into the CGI!

If you're going to see this, see it in the theatre, most definitely. You won't be *sorry* you saw it, but you won't be clamoring to see it again. But don't bother paying extra for 3D, it really makes virtually no difference for this movie.
I don't know if it's current CG technology or what, but all the modern fantasy/sci-fi movies are starting to feel the same to me. They're in badlands/a desert. There's a big crumbling arena battle with monsters. There's huge, sprawling chasms and virtually no vegetation and dusty, dirty chases and battles.
This wasn't a terrible movie, but it *should* have been a great movie. Instead, it just felt like I was watching Conan, Cowboys vs. Aliens, or even parts of Star Wars episodes I-III all over again. All of these films are starting to feel like watching different people play the same video game.
I'm sure those who haven't read the books will like it much better than those who have, also. It pulled a few classic bits from the books, but had little of the epic feel of Burroughs' books, instead feeling like yet another action movie.

I have seen mixed reviews for this movie and know that it didn't have a huge opening weekend but after seeing the preview it looked like something I would enjoy. I thought the story was great and the special effects were amazing. I liked the cast and was never bored or let down. It was not full of profanity or nudity being Disney but definitely kept me interested.

Not a fan of this movie. It seems to go on and on and on! The plot of the story itself is very good (most likely because the BOOK is better than the movie), but the execution of the story is done only fairly well. There were times I felt I was watching an updated Flash Gordon movie. John Carter lacked the personality to really draw you in and care about him. Princess Dehja was very wishy-washy (I'll do anything to save my people----except marry that mean man, that is!?!). I didn't care what happened to any of them by the end of the movie. I think the only truly interesting aspect of the movie were the Tharks---maybe the movie should have been about them instead!

Kaor all! Although it wasn't totally true to the book it was so wonderful to finally see the world of Burrough's Mars come alive on screen. The additions really added to the adventure and story. My son and husband who never read the books loved it. Woola rocks! Thank you Disney... please make more... can't wait to go back to Issus and meet up with those nasty Therns again, not to mention more adventures with the black and yellow races of Mars.

Spectacular images. Action sequences were exciting. Story was interesting -- think I should read the Burroughs books. However, the script was weak. And the audience in the fairly full theater I was in seemed underwhelmed rather than pumped up at the end. There was little originality in the film making. The one-man flying machines racing through obstacles (a machine this time) has been done before.
The John Carter character was hastily developed. The whole back-story of his wife and child kept appearing, but were not made especially relevant because there was nothing known about them other than what they looked like.
If you are going to see this, though, it needs to be seen in a theater. It's made for the big screen.

I took my 17 year old son to see the movie "John Carter" on its release day, 03/09/2012. We went to the 4:00pm Real HD 3d showing at Tinseltown Theater in Jacksonville, FL. The movie was incredible! We were both very much impressed. Disney has a winner here! Not only where the graphics top notch, but the movie had a great story to tell. The actors/actresses did a wonderful job of making you feel as if you where part of the movie, right there in the thick of this amazing action sequence. The science behind the science fiction was not so far-fetched as to be preposterous and in general was very intelligent. The twist at end of the movie was so clever that it borders genius. There is a lot of fighting, bloodshed and some aliens that might scare younger children. It is rated PG-13 and rightfully so, so leave the very little ones at home. As for the rest of the family, bring them! This is a must see movie... As for me, I will be buying the Blu-Ray/DVD when it is released~

I downloaded all ten John Carter books from Gutenburg to read on my Kindle. Wow, what a great story series. The IMAX movie was awesome!! You'll "see" why it cost 250M to make. Makes the books even more fun.

Recently I would go to the movies and would have to pay a fortune on Friday night but unfortunately not always feel like money well spent. Some movies just lacking either a plot, or a dialogue, or and ending. But this movie has it all. Especially the Ending. They just couldn't make it any better. The whole movie was a joy ride. I did not make it to watch it in 3D but 2D was so impressive I bet you cant go wrong with 3D on it or IMAX. It will be a NUMBER ONE MOVIE in AMERICA! "John Carter" is one movie not to be slept on! Hey! Wake up! I said "John Carter" is actually a really good flic!
Well, the title of this science-fiction adventure may not be that catchy. But the concept, story, and action are first rate!
Remember "Stargate"? Remember how cool that film was? This is like the 2012 version!
And talk about perfect casting for the Princess of Mars. Lynn Collins sets the screen on FIRE as Dejah Thoris! Despite the studio that brings you this movie, she ain't no Disney Princess! If you catch my drift!
So catch your "Z"s later and go and enjoy this one on the big screen!
